Do you "practice" gratitude?
I remember a few years ago, I'd take 10 minutes at the end of each day to write in my gratitude journal to reflect on the day. One of the prompts in the journal was about the three amazing things that happened each day; these were things I did, and not something that happened to me.
Asking this question never quite felt right. Hereโs why. When you give your full attention to whatever it is you do (or whoever you do it with), everything is amazing in its own way, because the amazement doesnโt come from the What, it lies in the How.
To compare one thing to another is to judge our everyday moments. Unless we stop judging, we can't be open to experiencing each moment for what it is. It's only when I stopped judging my everyday experience, did I start living. In other words, it's only when I stopped "practicing" gratitude, I started living with gratitude. There's a night-and-day difference between the two.
I like what the Persian mystic, Rumi has said:
Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.
I still reflect on my day now. But, the questions have changed. The two questions (among others) that I ask myself now include: what did I do today? And, how did I do those things? As you might surmise, the second question is way more important than the first one, even if it requires you to answer the first one before the second. ๐
Best,
Rishi Dass
