Every now and then, I hear from others:
The less, but better philosophy sounds great, but I don't want to do less in my life, I want to do more.
Here's the thing. Less, but better philosophy is not about doing less, rather it's about doing a few things well in the short term, so we can do more in the long term.
Why is that? Well, we only have a limited amount of time and attention to give, and anything worth doing is worth doing well, otherwise why even bother?! Besides, the joy is more in doing things, and less in having done them. To paraphrase the late philosopher Alan Watts, the point of dancing is to dance, and not to "finish the dance ASAP."
I believe there is no greater success in the world than rightful living — how we live our lives matters more than what we "achieve." It's about giving everything we do the time and attention it deserves, because how we do matters more than what we do. It's the only thing that matters.
It's only when we focus on the living, we end up doing everything better. Not only that, we end up achieving more in our lives (not less). 🙂
