Late summer into Fall
Greetings from the studio-
It was a crazy busy spring with multiple shows in Connecticut. Life is not slowing up this summer. I’m in the midst of getting trained as a Certified Michigan Naturalist through Washtenaw County and MSU’s extension service. Fabulous program and I’m learning so much about our Michigan ecosystems. Expect to see this playing an even more major role in my work in the future.
I’ve just started working with the Wright Ingraham Institute’s Nexus of Land and Water program looking at the impact of dust on snow in SW Colorado. I’m pleased to be part of this interdisciplinary team exploring ways to both educate and remediate the issues of dust in the 4 Corners region. We’re just getting started but I’m thrilled to be working with a group of soil scientists, ecologists, ranchers and creatives working to problem solve together.
And in two weeks I will set out for the Special Circumnavigation, Art & Science Expedition with the Arctic Circle to circumnavigate Svalbard. This time I won’t be on a Tall Ship but a polar equipped vessel able to travel up into the pack ice north of the Svalbard archipelago with a group of 100 artists. I’m bringing my field microscope and a plankton net courtesy of the University of Michigan Bio Station.
What is the thread unifying all of these activities? My mix of art and science working to understand and communicate our understanding of human impact on the natural world. I’m excited to share the results of these projects in the future with you all.
warmly-
Leslie
