Sculpting Workshop & Tiny Art
Hello! No shop update to report today (I should have one soon— perhaps next week, depending on firing schedules. Will let you know), but there are a couple other things I’m very excited to share.
The first one, chronologically, is that my pieces in the Enormous Tiny Art Show become available tomorrow! I have five of them.
The second thing I want to share is a little more unusual for me: I’m going to be teaching a class! It’s a two-session sculpting workshop through Pocosin Arts that will take place June 5 & 12 over Zoom. I’m calling it Big Stories, Tiny Details: Narrative Sculpture. The class will cover both theory as well as craft (in other words, I’ll be giving a little presentation and also demonstrating actual sculpting), and will go all the way through my process. In the first session, we’ll talk about how I come up with an idea, how to make sure every aspect of the piece supports that idea, drafting up a form, refining that form, and working from anatomy & reference. In the second session, we’ll hollow out the piece, continue to refine, and then get into the details. I’ll go through all my favorite tools and techniques for those tiny details that I adore, as well as a little more theory on how and where to use detail in a way that supports the overall story of your piece. It’ll be fun!!
I’m hoping the class will be equally interesting whether you’re an old hand at ceramic sculpting or relatively new, and I hope you’ll sign up!
I’m so excited to talk about how I approach art! I’ve long been interested in teaching, and this is my first big swing at it.
In the meantime, I’m working hard on pieces for an upcoming show titled Beasts of Burden. This will be a three-person show with Shing Yin Khor and Eva Funderburgh opening in May at Archimedes Gallery in Oregon.
If you want a hint at where I’m headed with that show, here’s an unfinished draft of a piece that I’m working on for it:
