Chips on a Sandwich | no. 22 | POCKETS

It's no use filling your pocket with money if you have got a hole in the corner. -- George Eliot (aka Mary Ann Evans)

There's nothing like a dress with pockets. -- Me

HIDDEN POCKETS: Once upon a time having pockets meant you had something important-- money, a weapon, some snuff-- to conceal. So historically men had all the pockets. Women had to settle for outside ones-- which was really just a pouch with some string (aka a purse) and was very easy to steal. The first official inside pockets in 17th century women's garments were hidden between so many layers of petticoats that it was impossible to find anything. But then came the suffragette movement and women rightly demanded pockets. The 1910 Suffragette Suit had no less than 6 of them:

DEEP POCKETS: Pocket depth has long been an issue in women's clothing: they're often so shallow that one can barely fit a full hand in one. I appreciate cozy, deep pockets-- like these ones:

NUPTIAL POCKETS: My friend made sure to have a pocket sewn into her custom-made wedding jumper. I think it's essential now. Forget get something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Every bride should have a pocket. Here are some lovely ones:

POCKET PROTECTOR: Long associated with engineers and scientists the pocket protector has virtually disappeared. Good news: for anyone looking to carry their pens up front this handmade protector adds a nice touch of distressed leather to any pocket.

SECRET POCKET: Does anyone else remember KangaRoos shoes from the 90s? They had tiny little zippered pocket that I LOVED. I used to bring my quarter to school-- to buy popcorn on Fridays-- safely secured in my Roos.

POLL: What's that teeny tiny pocket some jeans have used for? (And we have a bunch of doodlers-- according to the last poll.)
