Chips on a Sandwich | no. 11 | ZHUZH IT UP

Zhuzh or Zhoosh | verb | to make (something) more lively and interesting, stylish, or appealing, as by a small change or addition.

A SIMPLE SHIRT: I could honestly write an entire newsletter just on brooches. Nothing can elevate a plain t shirt/button down/blazer like a good brooch. They are effortless and can easily create a polished look when you have zero time/desire. Collar pins can do the same-- I love these quirky woodcut ones and this chained collar clip too.

A BORING COUCH: I feel genuine spite towards couches: high design ones are often uncomfortable while over-sized couches are eyesores but cozy. Yet we need them (though I'd rather have a house full of chairs). That's why I appreciate a good throw pillow or blanket. It can add softness to a couch with modern, clean lines or distract from an overly stuffed (although deliciously comfy) one. This stationary-inspired throw blanket makes me chuckle. (*Note the chair below doesn't need assistance from a throw but we get the picture.)

PLAIN PASTA: A bowl of spaghetti can instantly be dressed up with Calabrian chiles (chilies from the region of Calabria in Italy). When dried they can be pounded into a paste or preserved and packed in oil. The little peppers aren't just spicy they can be smoky salty and even a tad fruity. Toss your favorite pasta with a splash of the cooking water, chile oil or paste, grated Parmesan and a pinch of salt. Done. I also love to drizzle it on pizza or toast topped with ricotta.

A NONDESCRIPT DOOR: Not all doors can be the spectacular leaf-covered ones at La Sagrada Familia . But a simple adornment can make a home's entryway more inviting and arresting. Consider an interesting door knocker-- it may not get much use-- but think of it as a door brooch. Anthropologie has some nice ones that aren't too pricey.

POLL: Couch or armchair? (We have equal flower and fern lovers as indicated by last week's poll.)
