Chips on a Sandwich | no. 10 | N(ICE)
ICE TREAT: There is never less than 2 boxes of the creamy coconut Outshine bars-- 1/2 dipped in dark chocolate-- in my freezer. They are just about perfect (a roll around in some toasted almonds would be killer) and have become my sweet treat of the summer. If coconut and chocolate is not your thing then stock up on the lemon, lime, grape and pineapple-- all are excellent.
FREEZER FACE: For years I washed my face with the hottest water imaginable. Then an aesthetician told me I was doing it all wrong: cold water was better-- the skin constricts, and pores tighten. I changed the temp and treated myself to an ice roller. I stash it in the freezer and give my face an occasional roll. I'm not sure it does anything, but it feels nice!
CRUSHING IT: There's nothing like little nuggets of soft crushed ice. Especially when they're cooling down a root beer or coke. And crunching on crushed ice is the best. You can make a batch in your own freezer with this clever ice cube mold made by the same people who invented the Rabbit wine opener.
COOL ART: Who remembers those old school ice pack pouches with a screw-off cap? I grew up with one that was pale blue with the texture that can only be described as medical-grade moleskin. My mom would fill it up with ice every time I was feverish, and I would balance it on my forehead and stare up at the popcorn ceiling. Those memories came flooding back during one visit to the Whitney Museum of American Art where I faced Swedish-born artist Claes Oldenburg's giant Ice Bag- Scale C, 1971. It filled and deflated on a continuous loop and I couldn't look away.
ICE BOY: A delightful story about an impish ice cube who escapes from his tray in the freezer for an adventure: He melts at the beach and turns into steam. Up in the clouds his particles condensate into water and he re-freezes into a lumpy piece of hail and rains down only to reunite with his parents in a glass of iced tea. I know it seems like a stretch, but he already has arms and legs-- so just go with it.
POLL: Margaritas-- on the rocks or blended? (The f bomb won overwhelming from last week's quiz.)
