Now Open: Legesher Language Corpus πŸ“Š

We've collected how programming concepts are spoken across the world and compiled it into a corpus, now live on HuggingFace

Hey y’all πŸ‘‹,Β

πŸ’» How would computer science look if the foundation of technology were built in your language?

πŸ“£ Today, we're answering a piece of that question: the Legesher Language Corpus πŸ“Š is live.

The Legesher Language Corpus is a curated, ever-growing record of how programming concepts are actually understood and named across natural languages, drawn from Legesher's own translation packs and the contributions of native reviewers around the world.

We began with keywords found in Python and JavaScript, with the goal to expand this set to include many more languages (both programming and natural).

In the future, we imagine this dataset also holding all the "prior art" in the world of multilingual code (hint: it's more than you think!). For, it is the work of these individuals that inspires us to keep working. These are those who didn’t let the flickering idea of "why is this only in English" remain a Google search that ends in "oh well." πŸ•―οΈβ†’πŸ’‘

Instead, they saw their privileged access to an English-only market as a chance to do something for those often overlooked: people in under-resourced areas, prior generations without quality English tools, and the next generations still to come. These are the first movers, the iterators, the dreamers, the ones building a more open, language-inclusive future in technology.

🀝 We hope this corpus honors the work that has been done before, while guiding the world of multilingual code going forward. We don't want future innovators to have to redo the work our native reviewers have already done, nor do we want Python in Spanish to end up with four different versions of "elif."

Check out the Legesher Language Corpus πŸ“Š on HuggingFace today!

πŸ“Š 12,267 renderings across 230 concepts and 56 languages, and growing…
- Is there a dataset we should add, or an effort we've missed?
- What natural languages are you most excited for?
- Which programming language and its concepts should be next on our horizon?

With that, we would like to say thanks! This dataset holds contributions from Legesher's open source community spanning nearly 10 years! Thank YOU for believing in Legesher and helping us build a digital future where everyone can be a builder.

All the best,
Josh @ Legesher

πŸƒ Stay tuned for a flutter of releases in the coming weeks. Each one is an essential part of the newest version of Legesher, going public this fall! πŸƒ
