Last day to back Death to Pachuco
I'll be at Comic Arts Los Angeles this weekend!
Death to Pachuco Kickstarter campaign ends today.
The days leading up to the launch were riddled with uncertainty, trepidation, and excitement. Will people respond to a Chicano noir about a murder trial and racist event in the 1940s? Do I still have it in me to run a 30-day Kickstarter after four campaigns? Obviously, there was nothing to worry about. We did the thing. But it’s never a sure thing.
Rachel Merrill—co-creator and interior artist—texted me last night when we hit our goal as I was sitting in a room filled with friends watching David Lynch act his butt off in Twin Peaks: The Return. It was the first time this year that I felt a sense of relief. Rachel has gone above and beyond helping with the creation of the series, drawing preview pages, art design for our NSFW cover, and promoting the hell out of the project. She shared the weight of the responsibility, and I’m forever grateful.
Originally, we were going to print DtP (that’s short for Death to Pachuco, FYI) in black and white. But Lee Loughridge agreed to come on board and color the comic, so it was a no-brainer to shift gears and add him to the mix and change the whole plan weeks before launch.
David Lapham and Chloe Brailsford’s covers make our job selling the book a lot easier. Whenever I make a comic I always ask someone who I would buy a cover from. I have been lucky with landing those big cover artists when the time is right depending on their availability. I must mention the logo design is by the incredible Jared Fletcher. Jared was one of the first people I showed the pitch to because I wanted his flare and sensibility on this particular project. Honorable shoutouts to Will Dennis and Kate Newton for their invaluable feedback and notes.
But to quote Iron Chef’s Kenji Fukui, “The heat is on!” Production for DtP ramps up in January 2025. I will be providing more details via Kickstarter’s update function, but I’m sure stuff will spill over here. Besides, my subscribers make up 8% of the funds raised.
So, a big thanks to you.
I’ll be at Comic Arts Los Angeles aka CALA
CALA returns this Saturday and Sunday, December 14th & 15th! It’s hands down one of my favorite shows in the country. It’s free and open to public as the amazing graphic by Tola Howard reads. The show is back at 3015 Rosslyn St. L.A. 90065. Both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. My table location is labeled 41A next to Breena Nuñez and Lawrence Lindell of Laneha House. There are a lot of friends coming, so click here to check out the plathera of talent that will be tabling.
My friend Jo Pimienta asked me to be on their panel, and I can never say no to Jo. I’ll be on the Art School For Comics (Should You Do It?) panel at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 15th.
Spoiler: I didn’t go to art school.
Preorder Green Hornet & Miss Fury
The first issue of Green Hornet & Miss Fury #1 co-written by Alex Segura & moi, art by Federico Sorressa, color art by Lesley Atansky, and letter art by Taylor Esposito goes on sale on January 8th. Golden Apple makes it a little easier to order comics and have them shipped right to your door, so click here to secure your copy of the first issue. If you like it, add it to your pull!
I’m late to the party, Coop.
As you might have gather from the beginning, I’m watching season three of Twin Peaks. I am a Lynch fan. I spun his music when I worked at KXCI. I saw Eraserhead at The Loft back before they remolded the theater. It took a few times to get me interested, but I ended up binging the series back in 2015. My landlord convinced me to watch The Return—and I’m hooked. Don’t spoil anything because I’m on episode 13, so no memes or gifs! Anyway, I will leave you with the NIN tune from the iconic episode ocho.
I doubt I’ll have another update for you before the end of the 2024, so I’ll see you next year.
Cheers,
HB
