David Bowles and Hector Rodriguez reached out to me to write a story based on a long list of characters that had one to two sentence descriptions. Naturally, I picked the hero that has lizard attributes.
Lizards are everywhere in the Sonoran desert. One of my fondest memories was going to the laundry room outside during one horrible Tucson summer. My parents had a radio blasting while they were doing some yard work. My sister and I noticed there was a lizard doing pushups on the speaker in rhythm. It was just bumping to whatever 98.3 F.M. was blasting at the time. Might have been Air Force Ones.
Maybe it wasn’t exactly on beat, but that’s how I’d like to remember it. The point is I love lizards, okay.
I’m honored that I got to work with Salomee Luce-Antionette on this. We have had such a good collaborative understanding since our first short story on Project Çryptid. It’s a shame that we don’t own this character because we took two sentences and created something special. Sally is one of the best folks I’ve ever had the pleasure collaborating with. If you’re an editor, please hire her. You won’t regret it.
Here’s a preview of the one-shot that will be available on June 19th. Preorder at your local comic shop or from me personally via my Latinx Square store:
I have it on good authority that I will be doing a live interview podcast with David and Hector at 6 p.m. PST on Sunday. Warning: it’s duringMother’s Day, so, who knows if it will actually happen! But you should tune in via YouTube if you want to hear some Chispa chisme!
