January Update
Thank you for subscribing! This is my first ever newsletter. I’m aiming for monthly updates but might be more or less often as I figure it out. I’ll be talking about photography, and what I’m into at
Photography
Wolfen NC400 Film
I have been using this film a lot for the past couple of months. The colors are cinematic and I’m loving the results.
It’s hard to replicate this look digitally (I’ve tried). I like more opinionated color film like this.
I’m enjoying the muted color palette and blue green shadows.
Film Scanning
Experimentation continue with the Easy 35. My camera has a pixel shift feature and I can now confirm it works great for scans. I’ll only be doing this in super special cases since files are ~97.5 megapixels and 500mb each. I’ll do a full newsletter about this later.
Stationary
Hobonichi Techno Weeks
This is the first planner I’ve ever used and stuck with for more than a week - I’ve found “the one”. Now a month and a half in because you can start in December.
Lefty fountain pens
I am a lefty and loved calligraphy growing up. I always wanted to use fountain pens but if you’ve ever tried, it’s not a fun experience. In the process of getting Serena a fountain pen as a birthday present I learned left handed fountain pens are a thing. Thanks Goods for the Study / McNally Jackson!
What I’ve been reading
Ways of Seeing by John Berger - loved reading this! Art history and political theory. Bonus points for being an early proponent of the idea of the “male gaze”. Worth a read. Five starts.
Understanding a Photograph by John Berger - this is not so much a book as a collection of essays. Not as strong as Ways of Seeing. You might find one or two that resonate. Three Stars.
My Teaching by Jacques Lacan - Supposed to be a condensed and readable version of his work. It is instead a series of rambling lectures and only slightly more understandable. Two stars.
Watch This?
If you made it this far - check this out and maybe trade in some of your outdoor clothes? PFAs are scary. I traded in a bunch of things this month.
