A Forgotten Roll from February
My First Experience Photographing Snow on Film
I love the feeling of discovering a roll of film from a month or two ago. You never know exactly what’s on it, but the moment you see the images, you’re transported right back.
This week, I pulled out my developing kit and got to work. These shots were all taken on HP5+ film, developed in Eco Pro, and camera-scanned. They capture the snowstorm we had back in February.
It hasn’t snowed much in recent years, so it’s exciting to see how film captures the distinct light of a snowy day, especially since this is my first time photographing snow on film.
I’m happy with these photos. Black and white in particular feels texturally correct for what I was trying to share.
Since snow is essentially all highlights, I find it very easy to overexpose and lose detail, and I’ve never quite achieved a look I’m happy with.
Film is more forgiving and preserves more of the subtle textures and contrasts in the Snow.
That might just be a skill issue on my part with digital, but it’s fun to see the tangible impact that different mediums have on the final image.
