“Mr. Cogito and Certain Mechanisms of Memory” by Zbigniew Herbert: This bears the mark of a lot of poetry in translation, for better and worse – it aims at a different target, which is refreshing, but it’s not quite a target one can understand or appreciate when reading in the new language. There’s a lot of montage and occluded philosophy. The image that makes the journey across language most unscathed is the final one, the curtain that one must not “clutch at” and the elegant final turn.
