MIKE SIEGEL WINS! DSA is back on Council & we hit 7% Union card density!

MIKE SIEGEL WINS!

Hey y’all -

Exciting news from over the weekend, Mike Siegel, our endorsed comrade for Austin City Council, District 7 pulled out the win over the GOP-backed Gary Bledsoe!

Gary gave us a run for our money at the end there with an influx of cash from the city and endorsements from the chair of the Travis County GOP. The NIMBYs and conservatives put everything they had into this race, drafting Gary late in the race for an open seat in a district with conservative local political history. However, we ultimately got the win in the runoff through strong Election Day turnout for Mike, due in large part to DSA comrades knocking over 3,000 doors on Election Day!

I’m excited to say that DSA is back on city council for the first time since Greg Casar left, and the Austin progressive movement has been throughly affirmed by even an undemocratic subset of the population who vote in runoffs.

If you’d like to see a little recap of our efforts, here’s a reel I made out of the stories from the election cycle: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDlodD0gil5/?igsh=bGRxaDY0OG41ZHQw

7% Union card density!

Last week we hit 7% union card density, which means that 7 out of every 100 students at LASA have signed a union authorization card. This is exciting news and shows how our movement to put students health, safety and wellbeing first is gaining steam! We’re looking to hit 10% by Tuesday so we can ride a high into the funding vote at Austin DSA.

Total signed: 7.13% 110/1542
7.13% cards signed!

Austin DSA General Meeting (GBM), voting on Students United budget!

Speaking of Austin DSA, this Tuesday at 7pm is the general meeting, both in-person and on Zoom. It’s a potluck and always a blast to meet with other comrades. This month is extra important for us, because we’re going to be voting on allocating funding to Students United ($1000) to be able to fund our union drive & student council bids!

I really hope to see you there, and you do not need to be a DSA member to attend.

RSVP for the Austin DSA GBM

I’m so grateful to be in this fight for social & economic justice with y’all.

Solidarity Forever,

—reese
