larch needles newsletter 5/5

PROLOGUE

It’s unbelievable how much the world has changed in the last couple weeks. It’s the same every year, but it always blows me away. Spring always starts slowly - ephemerals emerging from the ground one by one, flower buds opening tentatively on the trees. Then as soon as the leaves start coming in on the maples, everything goes into high gear. Within a week, greenery has climbed up all the way from the edge of the river to the tops of the hills and ridges. The explosion of flowers makes the air almost nauseatingly sweet. It’s an absolutely magical time.

NEW FLASH

I’m discontinuing a large number of designs at the end of this month - those based on particularly fine linework. However, I still wanted to keep them going in some way, so I’ve been taking my favorites and translating them into a different linework style. The second row here has three examples of this! More on the way.

MAKING A CUSTOM COVERUP

I had the opportunity to do a really fun custom composition for a client! I thought it would be fun to give you all a peek at the process behind something like this.

The goal was to cover up this text tattoo, which was sadly blown out.

This is the initial design I drafted. It’s a combination of existing flash elements and new drawing done in Photoshop.

After getting the stencil placed right (no small challenge), we added in some extra stuff freehand. Here’s the final result!

EPILOGUE

At the end of my last newsletter, I asked people to send replies. I got a whole bunch and I absolutely loved all of them! Thank you for sending me pictures of moments of beauty you found outdoors (or just letting me know how much you like the newsletter). It really helped keep me motivated. I’m extending the same invitation this time! You can reply to the email or use the comment function.

Thank you so much for reading! Until next time.
