Invest, don't spend
Whenever you think of doing something, think of it as 'investing' rather than spending. 3 things you should invest, and in that order: Energy, Time and Money.
Energy - it is free - you just have to will it. Where will is lacking, change your perspective to trick your brain into it. This can be spending time with spouse/kids/team mates or on yourself. If you don't have time, whatever time you invet, invest it "fully".
Time - The rarest commodity, especially once you have accomplished something. However, that's all you have when you are starting out, especially when you don't have a silver spoon. Invest wisely - watch a movie but just think of it as investment in reclaiming your energy. You don't have to choose to right movie that gives you the maximum energy. Just think that you are watching any movie to refresh. This makes sure that whatever you are watching, you watch it fully. Read a book - think of it as investing to focus/learn/have fun.
Money - Inversely available to time. Where you cannot invest energy or time, invest money. Where you can/have to invest money, think of how you will benefit from it. Go on a vacation? maximise the perspective of fun - this allows you to tolerate the minor inconveniences. Buying a suit? See in what situations you'll wear them and what leverage that will give you.
Most people treat all of them interchangeably or worse think money is good enough to cover for the other two. If you are thinking long term, there are some relationships where you need all three in high quantities. Others you can get by with any one or small amounts of all 3. But no relationship can thrive well on just one of the three - no matter how large a quantity it is.
Be mindful - I am not saying "try to maximise the return on investment". All I am saying is "Be conscious that you are investing". The returns don't matter in the short term. In the long term, the pay out of this habit will be more than the individual returns themselves.
