Finding (or creating) the right cover art is harder than I thought!

My wife is a lucky woman. She’s currently publishing a book as well, in homage to a friend and colleague who’s retired. We both started looking for cover art for our books at the same time. She found hers in an afternoon — I’m still working on it.

The one she found is a beautiful aquarelle by a California artist who graciously agreed to allow her to use it for the cover art. Her book, a collection of articles on ethics and care in law and medicine by a variety of scholars, which she co-directed with two of her colleagues, is slated to come out in November.

Hopefully, so is mine!

This is the first image I thought of using, back when I started writing:

I called it “Alice ponders”. I’ve since uploaded it to DeviantArt as well.

This will likely not be the actual cover art: though I like the sketch itself, it has very little to do with the story. I’ve tried a few variations using the same sketch, but nothing quite fits.

Without giving anything away that the title doesn’t already, apoptosis obviously plays a role in the story, and therefore so do mitochondria. This is what they look like under a (very good) microscope.

They might make it onto the cover… Right now, though, they’re just part of a vague idea of what this book's cover might look like.

Luckily, my publisher has artists who can actually turn such ideas into cover art. I’ll keep you apprised of how it turns out.
