This past year I made a concerted effort to read more. I wanted what I read to span a range of topics that I’m interested in as well as those that I’m not well versed but would like to be.
Much of what I read lead to further exploration and scavenging for related content online. This is where the internet really shines — IMO. I found some gems, which are also linked to below.
Books
I oddly don’t read much fiction, but that’s something I’d like to change for 2020. For 2019 I ended up finishing a book every couple weeks and I’m hoping to double that number for 2020. Below are a few standouts for 2019 that I particularly enjoyed.
- The Four Horsemen by Christopher Hitchens
- Letter to a Young Contrarian by Christopher Hitchens
- Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue by Sam Harris
- The Burden of Bad Ideas by Heather Mac Donald
- 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson
- Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell
- Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell
- Economic Facts and Fallacies by Thomas Sowell
- The Madness of Crowds by Douglas Murray
- Principles by Ray Dalio
- Now You See It by Michael Bierut
- Writing Tools by Roy Peter Clark
- Coming Apart by Charles Murray
Articles
Some of the articles below are from 2018, but I revisited them again in 2019 because they happened to intersect with some of what I happen to be reading.
- The Evolutionary Argument Against Reality
- Kanye West and the Future of Black Conservatism
- The world is relying on a flawed psychological test to fight racism
- Meet the Renegades of the Intellectual Dark Web
- Why do we work so hard?
- The High Price of Stale Grievances
Videos
No matter how you look at it, YouTube can quickly turn into a time-sucking vortex; a rabbit-hole. But some of what you find at the bottom of that hole is amazing. Below are some lectures and debates that I was lucky enough to find.
- Thomas Sowell on the Myths of Economic Inequality
- Thomas Sowell w/ William F. Buckley Jr. (1981)
- James Baldwin Debates William F. Buckley (1965)
- Modern Times: Camille Paglia & Jordan B Peterson
- The Four Horsemen HD: Hour 1 of 2 - Discussions with Richard Dawkins, Ep 1
- The Four Horsemen: Hour 2 of 2 - Discussions with Richard Dawkins, Ep 1
