The Ethical Questions Software Engineers Can’t Ignore

Hi there 👋

Over the past weeks, global tensions have once again reminded us how fragile stability can be.

Conflicts escalate quickly.
Missiles are launched.
Countries react.

But what is often less visible is the technology behind modern warfare.

Today’s conflicts rely heavily on software systems:
- autonomous drones
- AI-assisted targeting
- real-time battlefield intelligence
- satellite data processing
- secure distributed communications

In many ways, modern warfare has become a software-driven system of systems.

Recently, the discussion became even more intense as some AI companies began openly considering collaborations with defense initiatives, while others chose a more cautious approach.

This raises difficult questions for our industry.

Most engineers do not work directly on military systems.
But many technologies we build today — AI models, distributed systems, computer vision, cloud platforms — can be used in dual-use scenarios.

The same tools that power medical imaging or logistics optimization can also power autonomous drones or battlefield analytics.

As software engineers and architects, we may eventually face questions like:
- Where do we draw our ethical boundaries?
- Is technology ever truly neutral?
- What responsibility do architects have when designing systems that can be used in many ways?

In my latest article on Thoughtful Architect, I explore these questions and the growing intersection between software, AI, and modern conflict.

Not to provide simple answers — but to encourage reflection about the role our profession plays in shaping the world.

Technology will continue to evolve.

Our responsibility is to continue building thoughtfully, understanding that the systems we design today may influence outcomes far beyond the code we write.
