A Week of Being Kin Lane - May 5th, 2025

While riding our bike throughout New York City we see people walking through the world with their minds tethered to some indoor environment, and cops on cell phones. Is social media and candy crush so important that you can’t be in the moment doing what you are supposed to be doing?

Walking By

People just seem to be moving to the rhythm of the machine and just walking by each other, never hearing when a shadow opens the door. There is so much you miss when walking through the world tethered to someone else’s platform, robbing you of the richness present in the world right around you.

When I hear conversations in other languages around NYC I often think about people I grew up with who feel you should have to speak English in the United States. How sad. I prefer variety.

Lightening the Load

May and June will all be about lightening the load, and our heart is heavy for the white Lab we met this week who was spending their last day in the park.

Last Day in the Park

Make the most of each day because they are weaponizing punchcards, databases, and APIs, but it is the sovereign satellite constellations that will be used to maintain control, after the next big market play for API focuses on selling to the military and police. How did technology become so evil? Or was it always?

Not All AI Are Bad

But, not all AI are bad, and AI will undoubtedly continue to drive much of the enshittification I am witnessing and counseling within. It is easy to see how agents are taking away your agency and adjusting men to be more like the machine, rather than the other way around that so many have been promising.

I worry about this dangerous normal we find ourselves in, but I wanted you to know that the chaos monkey was unleashed intentionally. After doing a brain scan on my head this week, Bryan Mathers of Visual Thinkery was able to render an accurate image of the work that went into preparing this newsletter for publishing.

As I look at the floors in our apartment I think it will need a cleaning this weekend, or maybe the next. And I have to give a shout out to Liz and Eld, who taught me the value of a clean house and clean mind.

Dumpling Heaven

Audrey and I did a dumpling crawl in Chinatown this week. It was one of those perfect days filled with steamed buns, dumplings, ending with the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had.

Cinnamon Roll Heaven

I am pleased with my state of mind this week. While I can’t completely tune out the current assault on our reality by the current administration and artificial intelligence, I think I am doing a damn good job of balancing what matters to me most in this messed up timeline.
