A Week of Being Kin Lane - May 12th, 2025
This week was all PoppyRLane. Well, every week is, but this week I really dialed in how I run our cameras during our daily ride, allowing me to easily process any of the images and video from our excursion for posting to @PoppyRLane on “Insta”—we even put her handle on her sidecar.

We are still figuring out the optimal setup for the sidecar. We had more flats this week and wore through another tire, but we have a new brand of tire that has a hardier rubber tread and seems to already be doing better. Except, the last couple of rounds of flats and misconfiguration of the sidecar bolts have led to the wheel bearings becoming worn and squeaky—we have a new wheel on the way, and are still able to roll with current setup, and making friends along the way.

I did some work on unwinding my programming from growing up libertarian, and working through some of the reasons why I was good with the technology. Responding to some of the news in this moment I was questioning why conservatives are so obsessed with fluoride and not lead, but also find it very telling how we all tend to feel that subways are dirty, and many believe tht there is no possible way that public infrastructure could be racist.

What we have found to be a priority or essential part of our historic public infrastructure is currently being perpetuated in what I consider to be the csabstractions occurring across private digital infrastructure today—determining what is a priority for companies over what is essential for the public.

I can roll with a lot of things, but I do not like people who play games with me—it is something that messes up my mojo in ways that isn’t easy to recover from. After talking with one of my sibling this week about how easy it is to drive your mental state into a ditch I wanted to revisit how reading and writing ultimately is how I find my way back onto the road.

While crafting a character for a fictional story I am working on I was researching Converse All-Stars, or Chucks. Did you know they’ve been around since the 1920s? I assumed they were from the 50s or 60s, but did not imagine it going back to after WWI. Crazy.

Audrey and I went back for more of those amazing cinnamon roles from Sunday Morning, and went to one of our favorite Italian places Giardino where I had the best lasagna I have every had in my life. Seriously, like a textbook example of what lasagna should be—followed up by a Cannoli.

Mother’s day is hard. Full stop. We have entered the time of the year where Isaiah is the heaviest on our hearts, from the moment we got the call he passed away to his birthday every year is a serioiusly tender time in this household. It has been five years since he left, and the Poppy dawg is also five years old.

Starting from the principle of care is a counter project to AI’s thoughtlessness and view from nowhere. - Dan McQuillan
