A Week of Being Kin Lane - March 17th, 2024
Last week’s newsletter was sent from the Oregon Coast. Shortly after hitting send my brother and his wife drove me to Portland where we had lunch and they dropped me off at the airport for my flight to Seattle. The Portland airport was nicely remodeled and my trip to Seattle was short. Then guess who met me at the airport — my kiddo! Even without a car they took the metro down to the airport and was waiting for me when I landed. <3 <3 <3

My kiddo was an excellent host, and even though their couch wasn’t big enough for me to sleep on, we spent Tuesday doing our thing, roaming bookstores, drinking tea, and eating delicious food. We managed to eat Dick’s Burgers (local favorite), Dough Zone dumplings, and a delicious hot pot before we went to see a theater production called Mother Russia. While it wasn’t Broadway, but the show was very entertaining and I really really enjoy doing real people things with my kiddo.

After making it back to NYC I have spent a lot of time napping and thinking about the diff between the east and west coasts of the United States. I still see myself as a west coast kid, but I am really becoming fond of my view of things from New York City. The diversity, culture, and food makes it difficult to live anywhere else in the US. You pay a premium to live in NYC, but it is worth it, and I think other than the regular trip to see the family and kiddo, I am staying put on the right coast.

Audrey ran the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon today. I am extremely proud of her, although she’ll dismiss her performance today, I super impressed that she gets up, goes out, and finishes these very difficult races. It’s not even the races, the training she does leading up to the races is inspiring. We couldn’t find her in the race as she ran by, but as usual Poppy was making lots of friends and was making the most of the crowds.

I finished The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin last week and started the Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. I am finding comfort staying immersed in fiction and staying off social media as much as possible. There isn’t a lot of care in what we read about these days, and I am finding that I can keep the stomach from being in a total knot and the shoulders from tightening up by reading books and writing here in my notebook, on my blog, and via this newsletter. I feel it is the antidote to what we are all suffering from.
