Listen to Black Journalism w/ Ryan Sorrell
Plus an article about kid climate activism
Hello and welcome back to the newsletter! Times are scary but there is always hope. Writing, informing and defending is important, especially right now for black and queer communities. That was one of the messages that was mentioned by Ryan Sorrell, the media organizer at the Kansas City Defender. We talked about journalism and how that impacts kids and marginalized communities. [This episode includes people talking about gun violence. May not be suitable for younger audiences]

You may ask, “Why should I help the climate? What’s the point?” Valid question.
It is important for kids to take care of the planet because we will inherit a planet with more frequent extreme weather events than ever before. Climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates.
But wait, aren’t adults supposed to be keeping the climate regulated because we will soon inherit it? Another valid question. Adults, specifically the ones that run our government, aren’t doing much. But there are some organizations that are helping.
Save the Children is implementing various programs to help communities adapt to climate change, including providing food security programs, emergency relief supplies, and advocating for policy changes.
They also have a Humanitarian Climate Change Initiative that partners with communities to utilize early warning systems and resources for taking action before climate events occur.
Many countries are committing to net zero emissions by 2050, although more needs to be done to cut emissions in half by 2030 to limit warming to 1.5°C.
