Marley Dias, an American activist and writer, initiated the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign in November 2015 when she was in 6th grade. The campaign aimed to collect 1,000 books with black female protagonists to donate to schools in the U.S. for black girls.
Marley's campaign gained widespread attention and support, and she ultimately exceeded her initial goal by collecting more than 11,000 books. As a result, she was able to distribute the books to schools and communities, promoting diversity and representation in stories for young readers. Marley's dedication inspired many and has significantly impacted the promotion of diversity in literature. According to her website, marleydias.com, “With your help we have collected over 13,000 books; many of them have the same title, but we do have lots of unique ones as well. This database includes 1000 of those books and more is coming.”
