#88 Best Album of 2000 Tournament: Week #7 Wrap-Up

I come here not to buy Week Seven, but to praise it. Three upsets, and a new Best Album of 2000 record! Pr-etty cool!
So last week, Idlewild (#66) upset U2 (#66) (not much of an upset really), De La Soul (#76) upset The Mountain Goats (#53) (a little more significant, but not much), and Wu-Tang Clan (#88) upset Morphine (#44) (there we go, that’s the stuff). Still, if these weren’t amazing upsets, it’s enough to shake things up, keep us on our toes, throw a little chaos into the prediction brackets, all of which I like.
Then, on Thursday, PJ Harvey (#2) defeated Moloko (#127) by a whopping 97 votes, completely demolishing the previous Best Album of 2000 record (OutKast over Compulsive Gamblers by 76). At the time, I opined that this 7.1% vote share might be the biggest crushing by a match with over 100 votes. Not so! According to the unofficial-but-really official Best Album Ombudsman @hellonfriscobay.bsky.social, we’ve had at least two that were even worse for the losing album, both in the 1997 tournament. #126 Idiot Flesh, FANCY got 10 votes against #3 Yo La Tengo, I CAN HEAR THE HEART BEATING AS ONE’s 151, a 6.6% vote share. Then, #123 Honey Is Cool, CRAZY LOVE got 10 votes against Portishead, PORTISHEAD’s 162, a 6.2% vote share. The more you know!
