#401 Nominations for the Best Album of 2001 are Now Open!

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

The apes regard the monlith in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

It’s time! Nominations are now open for the upcoming Best Album of 2001 tournament! Go here and fill out a form.

You should read the directions provided, but here’s a quick rundown:

  1. To use the form, you’ll have to sign in to Google, like with the voting. If you won’t/can’t, let me know at kentmbeeson@hey.com and like the Beatles we’ll work it out.

  2. Until the nomination period ends, you can go back and edit it at any time. So feel free to load up your faves now, listen to some new stuff and then update it if you find something that really floats your boat.

  3. The accepted Best Album style is the artist name, then the album IN ALL CAPS. (Ex: Firewater, PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY.) Barring that, please try to put the artist first regardless. Furthermore, try to hit return after entering each album into the form, so you have a nice text tower of album titles. (See my list below.) It makes for a nice clean list to export later. Thanks!

  4. Generally, greatest hits and live albums do not qualify for the tournament, nor do albums not released in 2001. That said: JUST NOMINATE IT. NOMINATE ANYTHING. Do not concern yourself with whether it qualifies. Nominate something by Benson Boone if you want. Fact is, if it doesn’t end up making the cut on nomination votes, the qualifications don’t matter. If it does make the cut, then I’ll determine eligibility.

  5. Nomination period is two weeks — January 17 2025 to 11:59PM January 31 2025. (Note that I will likely turn off the nomination switch sometime on the morning of February 1.)

After the two weeks, I’ll collate the data, and every mention of an album counts as a vote. I’ll put the albums in order from most votes to least. As there are only 128 slots available in the tournament, I go down the list, giving each album a slot, until there are no slots left. What usually happens is that, say for example, I can fill up the top 113 slots with albums that have 8 or more nomination votes, but when I extend that to 7 or more nomination votes, I suddenly have 157 albums that qualify. When that happens, and it almost inevitably does, that would mean, in this case, that I have (128-113=) 15 open slots. Open slots are filled in a number of ways, but that’ll be another newsletter.

Now. Just because the nomination period has begun, doesn’t mean you can’t keep listening to 2001 albums for stuff to nominate. Here’s a list of what I’m likely to nominate, sorted into my personal ranking system (Love, Like/Love, Like, Interesting/Like, Interesting, Lukewarm, Leave). Anything Interesting/Like or lower isn’t getting a nom from me.

LOVE IT Ryan Adams, GOLD Arch Enemy, WAGES OF SIN Cannibal Ox, THE COLD VEIN Daft Punk, DISCOVERY Destroyer, STREETHAWK: A SEDUCTION Firewater, PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY Guided by Voices, ISOLATION DRILLS 1 Am Kloot, NATURAL HISTORY Life Without Buildings, ANY OTHER CITY Melechesh, DJINN The Pernice Brothers, THE WORLD WON'T END Spoon, GIRLS CAN TELL The Strokes, IS THIS IT System of a Down, TOXICITY Techno Animal, THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BOMB The White Stripes, WHITE BLOOD CELLS Andrew W.K., I GET WET Windir, 1184 Rob Zombie, THE SINISTER URGE
These are the tippity-top for me in 2001. Anything not bold got on this list after one listen, which is impressive. (To me, at least.)
LIKE IT/LOVE IT Aphex Twin, DRUKQS Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, THE SWIMMING HOUR Beulah, THE COAST IS NEVER CLEAR Cake, COMFORT EAGLE Converge, JANE DOE Destruction, THE ANTICHRIST Dope, LIFE Eels, SOULJACKER Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, MISS E... SO ADDICTIVE Godflesh, HYMNS Gorguts, FROM WISDOM TO HATE Gotan Project, LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO Idaho, LEVITATE Illogic, GOT LYRICS? Jimmy Eat World, BLEED AMERICAN Josie and the Pussycats, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE Opeth, BLACKWATER PARK Rebaelliun, ANNIHILATION Radiohead, AMNESIAC Rilo Kiley, TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS The Shins, OH, INVERTED WORLD Slayer, GOD HATES US ALL Stone Temple Pilots, SHANGRI-LA DEE DA George Strait, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED Tenacious D, TENACIOUS D Tipsy, UH-OH! Tricky, BLOWBACK Akira Yamaoka, SILENT HILL 2 (ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK)
This is stuff that I think is really great but maybe missing just a little somthing that keeps it from being ranked Love; that little something might just be time and exposure. The Gotan Project album is probably one more listen away from being ranked Love.
LIKE IT A*Teens, TEEN SPIRIT Aaliyah, AALIYAH Abandoned Pools, HUMANISTIC Air, 10 000 HZ LEGEND Akercocke, THE GOAT OF MENDES American Head Charge, THE WAR OF ART Antibalas, LIBERATION AFRO BEAT, VOL. 1 Autechre, CONFIELD Basement Jaxx, ROOTY Blink-182, TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS AND JACKET Blue Öyster Cult, CURSE OF THE HIDDEN MIRROR Built to Spill, ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE Mary Chapin Carpenter, TIME* SEX* LOVE Constantines, CONSTANTINES Death Cab for Cutie, THE PHOTO ALBUM Dimmu Borgir, PURITANICAL EUPHORIC MISANTHROPIA The Fall, ARE YOU ARE MISSING WINNER Four Tet, PAUSE Fu Manchu, CALIFORNIA CROSSING Robbie Fulks, COUPLES IN TROUBLE The Kiss Offs, ROCK BOTTOM Gamma Ray, NO WORLD ORDER Gojira, TERRA INCOGNITA Gorillaz, GORILLAZ The Gossip, THAT'S NOT WHAT I HEARD Jan Jelinek, LOOP-FINDING-JAZZ-RECORDS Joel Plaskett Emergency, DOWN AT THE KHYBER Kings of Convenience, QUIET IS THE NEW LOUD Kings of Convenience, VERSUS
An album that gets a Like means, Hey yeah, you know, I’d listen to that again. I find most albums likeable, and Likeable.
Labradford, FIXED::CONTEXT к7 S Le Tigre, FEMINIST SWEEPSTAKES Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE Lightning Bolt, RIDE THE SKIES The Living End, ROLL ON Lost Horizon, AWAKENING THE WORLD Lovage, MUSIC TO MAKE LOVE TO YOUR OLD LADY BY Shelby Lynne, LOVE, SHELBY MF Doom, METAL FINGERS PRESENTS: SPECIAL HERBS, VOL. 1 Scott Miller & the Commonwealth, THUS ALWAYS TO TYRANTS Miss Kittin & the Hacker, FIRST ALBUM Modest Mouse, EVERYWHERE AND HIS NASTY PARLOUR TRICKS ep Mouse on Mars, IDIOLOGY N*E*R*D, IN SEARCH OF... Please note that only the 2001 electronic version of N*E*R*D’s IN SEARCH OF… qualifies; the version made with the band Spymob is 2002.

If you’re looking for recommendations of a heavier bent, be sure to check out @OneTruePoster’s 2001 survey of metal, which you can find right here. A number of his recommendations went straight to my Love list, so @OneTruePoster is a name you can trust.

I think that’s it for now! I’ll keep you updated if anything changes. Meanwhile, keep listening to 2001 albums, keep updating your nomination list, and we’ll meet back in two weeks! [CLAP] Break!

Kent
