#370 Best Album of 1989 Tournament: Week #22 Wrap-Up

Hey folks!

We have our first upset of Round 3! #19 RAW LIKE SUSHI took out #14 AUTOMATIC, 139-127. That sounds close but not that close, but the reality was that for most of the day, it was a horse race, with one album leaping out ahead, sometimes by 9 votes, then the other album racing back out in front, sometimes by 9 votes. And when that wasn’t happening, it was a flat-out tie. When matches are really close, in the last hour I like to repeatedly reskeet the Bluesky post to generate more votes. An hour before the match ended, RAW LIKE SUSHI was up by only 4 votes, and I reposted the match several times to get more votes in. Turns out, though, that only RAW LIKE SUSHI fans heard the call, generally speaking, leading to a comparative blowout by 12 votes. A little disappointing, as I’m an AUTOMATIC fan and I had it winning in my bracket. It be like that sometimes.
In other news, THREE FEET HIGH AND RISING got 183 winning votes, the most of any winning album in the Bluesky era. In the 2000 tournament, STANKONIA defeated KID A with 130 votes, and in this 1989 tournament, the next highest is when BLEACH defeated STEEL WHEELS with 169 votes. Can we top this? I’ll be honest, I’m not so sure, but we still got a lot of matches left.
THE BEST ALBUM OF 1989 PREDICTION BRACKET TOP 20
There was only one upset this week, but major changes happened on the Prediction Bracket chart, suggesting that that one upset was pretty important. Last week’s new #1, No Movement In a Bad Bracket, dropped to #3, and the top two are brand new to the top 5. B-Sky Bouillabaisse rockets up 9 notches to #2, and Lol Tolhurst is Johnny Ryall, last week #8, leaps over everyone else to become the newest #1 bracket.
Those jumps of 9 and 7 notches are pretty big, but not the biggest this week. The biggest is an amazing 12 notch leap from Nose Chain Nation, going from #18 to #6. While it hasn’t made any big leaps, this week I want to shout out Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Picks, which has for the last ten weeks (save one), been in the top five this entire time. It’s only peaked at #2; will slow and steady win the race? Stay tuned.
We also see the arrival of three debuts, although only one is actually new. In at #18 is the brand new Going with the Obvious, returning to #10 is Deep Dark Truthful Bracket, and the highest (re)debut at #8 is Prognostication Street. Welcome, all!
We saw some big movement up this week, and there’s some big movement down. style. class. love technique. falls 7 to #17, former #2 PRETTY much HATE tin MACHINE falls 9 notches out of the top ten to #11, Strange Angels (Predicting Just For Me) fell 8 to #16, and PAST WHERE THEY PICK THE BRACKETS fells 7 to #19. But the biggest droppers this week are sctttnnnt and Drink Milk, both of which fall ten to #14. We had three debuts, and we had three fall off this week: I'II Believe in My Bracket (Or I'II Be Leavin' You Tonight) (last week #20), former #1 Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! Breathe, You Bracket! (last week #19), and Static in My Bracket from Channel Z (last week #17). Time’s running out, so hope you can return soon!
