#364 Best Album of 1989 Tournament: Week #21 Wrap-Up

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

The TEMPLE has been demolished. You’ve floated away, Julee. PRESIDENT YO LA TENGO, you’re impeached. NEW YORK, I’m walkin’ heah! More like Ministry of Eliminated Albums.

Another week of matches, another week of expected results. The closest thing we had to a competitive match was between RHYTHM NATION 1814 and FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT, which RN1814 won by “merely” 28 votes. (That’s a solid K.O. in Best Album [Bluesky Era] terms.) The rest were blowouts, with the winner defeating the challenger by near or over 100 votes. I used to say that it was Round 3 when the choices got difficult. While that’s true for many matches, I can’t help but now think Round 3 is just another version of Round 2, where it’s about culling the field, and it’s Round 4 where choices get difficult. I guess we’ll find out soon enough, as it looks like Round 4 starts on Nov. 5.

THE BEST ALBUM OF 1989 PREDICTION BRACKET TOP 20

WE HAVE A NEW NUMBER ONE BRACKET! That’s right, after hanging on in the top 5 (or thereabouts) for 8 weeks, in week 9, No Movement In a Bad Bracket has taken the top spot. Congrats! Furthermore, PRETTY much HATE tin MACHINE moves up two spots to a new high of #2, and Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Picks is right there with it. This leaves the #3 spot to #4, which is also tied, between sctttnnnt and Drink Milk, which is also their highest position in the chart so far.

Despite all this activity, there’s no real big mover this week, just a lot of brackets moving up two and three spaces. So I’ll take this moment to highlight style. class. love technique. which, after seven weeks, has finally cracked the top ten. Kudos!

We also have two debuts that are actually re-debuts. In at #20 is I'II Believe in My Bracket (Or I'II Be Leavin' You Tonight) last seen in week #5, and, after falling twenty places right off the chart last week, Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! Breathe, You Bracket! returns, coming in at #19.

Those are the net positives, so now with the net negatives. After six weeks at #1, CORNY drops six notches down to #7. If I’m doing my math correctly, it looks like CORNY missed two of the five matches. If I’m still doing my math correctly, it looks like if CORNY had only missed one, it would still be #1. D’oh! Yet, that wasn’t the biggest drop this week. We also had Static in My Bracket from Channel Z fall 8 places from #9 to #17, but that still wasn’t the biggest drop. The biggest drop goes to PAST WHERE THEY PICK THE BRACKETS, falling from #3 all the way to #12, nine notches.

Finally, two brackets fall off the chart completely. Prognostication Street (last week #15) and i Doolittle Deep Listening (last week #6) are out of here, but I hope only for now. But time is running out!
