#353 The 32 Best Albums of 1989

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

Here are the 32 best albums of 1989 as decided by you, the voters. If anyone asks you what the 32 best albums of 1989 are, you direct them to this official and binding list. The albums are presented in seed order, from highest to lowest, from most expected to be here to least expected. Any album with a seed of #33 or lower was an underdog and had to fight one higher seed to be here, so kudos to those albums. Any album with a seed of #65 or lower had to defeat two higher-seeded albums to be here, twice as hard as the other underdogs, so double kudos to those albums.

Without further ado, the 32 Best Albums of 1989:

Seed #1 Pixies, DOOLITTLE

On a brown background is a monotone photo of a small monkey. The monkey has a halo and is surrounded by three numbers: 5,6 and 7. The picture of the monkey has a green outline of a box around it, and within that box are green lines that make a bunch of connected shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, stars, trapezoids. etc.

Seed #2 Beastie Boys, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE

A photograph of a street corner in New York. There is a store called Paul's Boutique on the corner, as indicated by the sign that hangs over the sidewalk to the left. Above the store is a tall brick edifice, presumably apartments. On the sidewalk are clothes hanging from awning as a display, as well as a table with all sorts of objects on it, but difficult to identify any one object. There are two additional signs on the building, just below the brick edifice: "Lee's Sportswear" and "Ben's Shoes."

Seed #3 De La Soul, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING

Black and white photos of three young Black men, arranged in a circle as if you are on the ground and they are looking down at you from above. The background is very bright yellow. There are hand drawn flower shapes in blue and orange arranged around them.

Seed #4 The Cure, DISINTEGRATION

We see the face of The Cure singer Robert Smith, with pale white skin, black hair, black eyeshadow, and red lips. (He's one of the most Gothiest men alive.) Around him are images of flowers. The photo has a sense of distortion, because I believe it's actually a projection onto a wall or another surface.

Seed #5 Nine Inch Nails, PRETTY HATE MACHINE

A digitized photgraph of some kind of machinery. It kinda looks like "Predator Vision" but the colors are blue and pink. It could be the wheelwell of a motorcycle? Maybe an engine? A close up of an indoor fan? No idea.

Seed #6 Nirvana, BLEACH

A black and white negative (creep) image of Nirvana playing (three guitarists and one drummer) all of them banging their heads and making their hair whip around.

Seed #7 The Stone Roses, THE STONE ROSES

This is a painting in a Jackson Pollock style, of splatters of white and black paint on a dark green background. On the left are three thick strips of paint, one red, one white, one blue. There are three circular slices of an orange or lemon on the canvas as well. THE STONE ROSES in gold lettering is in the center, and one of those slices forms the O of Roses.

Seed #8 N.W.A, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

Six young Black men shot from the ground looking up, so they appear to be standing over you. They are arranged in a circle. One of them is pointing a gun at the camera. They all look a little disappointed, like you fucked up and now they have to kill you. Also, please note there is no period after "A" in N.W.A

Seed #9 Tom Petty, FULL MOON FEVER

A photo of Tom Petty, a skinny white guy with a long narrow face, playing a guitar. He has an odd look on his face; he may be biting his lip? The photo is tinted rainbow style, going from red at the top to yellow (which covers most of Petty's body), to blue at the bottom.

Seed #10 The B-52's, COSMIC THING

A photograph of the B-52's, tinted with a rainbow of colors, red to yellow to green to blue. They are arranged from left to right, in performance. First is Keith Strickland, a young white man with longish New Wavey hair, playing guitar and smiling. Second is Cindy Wilson, a young white woman wearing a bowler-shaped hat and a very long braid going down her shoulder to her waist. She wears a sparkly coat and is playing a bongo and singing. Third is Fred Schneider, a young white man with short hair, in a suit and tie, holding a microphone in a stand, and facing Cindy, singing to her. Last but not least is Kate Pierson, who has very big red hair that frames her face like a circle. She is wearing a shimmering dress and is singing into a microphone on a stand, and is facing (a presumed) audience.

Seed #11 Fugazi, 13 SONGS

A red background. At the top in black reads "FUGAZI" and along the bottom in the same font "13 SONGS."

Seed #12 New Order, TECHNIQUE

A color photo of a statue, some kind of cherubic figure, holding some kind of plants, leaves, I think. The lighting on it colors it from dark red to green to blue. The upper part of the background is dark pink, and that turns into dark purple by the bottom.

Seed #13 Janet Jackson, JANET JACKSON'S RHYTHM NATION 1814

A black and white photo of Janet Jackson, a beautiful young Black woman, from the shoulders up. She wears a black cap, and a jacket with a military-style collar. The hat and the collar both have a metal plate that read 1814. She wears an a hoop earring with a key attached. She stares off to the right.

Seed #14 The Jesus and Mary Chain, AUTOMATIC

An offwhite background with a large star in the middle. Within the star is a blue-green toned photograph of the faces of Jesus and Mary Chain bandmembers Jim Reid and William Reid. They are both pale white men with shaggy dark hair; one wears sungIasses. I don't know which one's Noel and which one's Liam, I don't know know which one's Tegan and which one's Sara, and I don't know which one's Jim and which one's William. And I like it that way.

Seed #15 Madonna, LIKE A PRAYER

A close up of Madonna's exposed belly and crotch of her jeans. The top buttons of the jeans are unbuttoned. Madonna's hands are on top of her jeans, her thumbs tucked inside. Two long pieces of jewelry hang (presumably) from her neck, strings with various gems and baubles and rings on them. They probably have Catholic significance but I do not know what. If you want to see Madonna's face, cf. Ciccone Youth, THE WHITEY ALBUM.

Seed #16 Galaxie 500, ON FIRE

A photograph of the band, taken from a low angle on the ground looking up at them. They're dressed in T-shirts. There's a guy with a round face and longish light-colored hair, a woman in a dark shirt with short dark hair and large spiral earrings, and another guy with short moussed hair in a white t shirt. The whole thing is orange-tinted. A great deal of the picture is the sky above the three, and the sky is orange.

Seed #17 Faith No More, THE REAL THING

A circular pie-tin shape, like the ring created when a drop water hits a surface, with crown-like protrusions around the edge of it. Inside the shape is a column of fire. Behind the image is a picture that suggests the cracked dry surface of a desert or even volcanic landscape, but also the branches of trees. What it actually is eludes me.

Seed #18 Kate Bush, THE SENSUAL WORLD

A black and white photo of Kate Bush, a white woman with dark hair and large eyes. She holds a rose in front of her mouth, obscuring it.

Seed #19 Neneh Cherry, RAW LIKE SUSHI

A color photograph of a young Black woman with her hair pulled back, her arms crossed, and wearing loads of bracelets and a very large medallion. She has a very.. angry? disappointed? smug? look on her face. It's very intense, regardless. The background is blank white.

Seed #20 Julee Cruise, FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT

A blurry image of a naked pink Barbie-like doll, apparently floating in pure darkness. The doll is somewhat small compared to amount of darkness around it, as if it is being engulfed by the darkness. Would it surprise you to know David Lynch shot this? It shouldn't.

Seed #21 Lou Reed, NEW YORK

A black and white photo of five Lou Reeds, standing near a brick wall and sidewalk. They're all white guys with black hair who emanate New York cool. Starting from the left: one is in a black wifebeater and sunglasses and looks at the camera, his arms crossed defiantly. The next two are looking to the left; they wear hats and dark jackets. The fourth has his back to us; he wears a hat and sunglasses. The fifth is facing us but is focused on lighting the cigarette in his mouth. He wears sunglasses, a long black jacket, and blue jeans with a belt.

Seed #22 Neil Young, FREEDOM

A color photgraph of Neil Young, a white man in a blue jacket, blue cap with a white star on it, and tie-dyed shirt with a radiation symbol on it. He is singing. He exhibits the most "cranky uncle" energy in the universe. He's playing acoustic guitar and has one of those harmonica holders on his neck. It looks like it was shot in concert.

Seed #25 Prince, BATMAN

It's the Batman logo as used in the 1989 film, an oval with a bat shape inside it. The bat is black, everything around it is gold and there are glints on it, as if made of metal. The logo is zoomed in a bit so it's cut off on the left and right edges.

Seed #27 Fine Young Cannibals, THE RAW & THE COOKED

A black and white photo of, one the left, a young Black man, with narrow eyes, slightly pursed lips, and a widow's peak. On the right, two pasty white guys with short hair. Behind the picture are a mass of grey shapes that suggest letters made out of horshoes, but aren't letters or horseshoes.

Seed #28 Yo La Tengo, PRESIDENT YO LA TENGO

A black and white still of Yo La Tengo in concert, showing a white guy playing guitar and a woman on drums, but the still is, I think, being warped and burned as if caught in a projector. I think. I could not find a good, large version of this picture, so I'm working from a very small one, and my 53 year old eyes can only do so much.

Seed #30 Camper Van Beethoven, KEY LIME PIE

A extremely blurry photograph of three smiling people, presumably members of Camper Van Beethoven. They appear to be standing in front of some kind of statue, but the picture is so blurry and overexposed and manipulated that I'm not sure what it is or even if it's really there. The overall color of the photo is an extremely light brown-orange.

Seed #31 Ministry, THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE

On a black background, an X-ray of a human skull. There appear to be metal bracers or attachments of some kind within the flesh of the head, two near the nasal area and one on the right side near where the ear would be.

Seed #36 The Cult, SONIC TEMPLE

A photo of guitarist Billy Duffy, a white guy with long hair that completely covers his face. He's shirtless save a vest, and wears leather pants. He's taking a triumphant pose, with one hand pointed in the air, the other hand on the neck of the guitar, and his legs spread out -- he forms a kind of triangle shape. This is in front of a heavily distorted close up of singer Ian Astbury, his head thrown back and a microphone in his hand. This picture of him is almost totally in red, with some green highlights.

Seed #39 Jungle Brothers, DONE BY THE FORCES OF NATURE

A colorful drawing of the heads of three young Black men, surrounded by images of the jungle along the bottom (grass, trees, a camel, a lion) and a city skyline above them. Beyond the sklyine is a big purple volcano, erupting. Also above them is a Black fairy-like creature with butterfly wings. Around the edges of the picture are planets.

Seed #41 Mekons, THE MEKONS ROCK N' ROLL

So this appears to be a drawing or painting of a white man with dark hair and an intense stare -- it's possible it's supposed to be Elvis Presley. But it is radically obscured by an overlay of colors and patterns. The patterns suggest trees and/or leaves, with various color filters (orange, blue, red) applied.

Seed #42 The Wedding Present, BIZARRO

A dark brown-green background. In red, done with a pencil or crayon, is a kind of explosion shape, made out of a series of scribbles.

Seed #97 The D.O.C., NO ONE CAN DO IT BETTER

A color photograph of The D.O.C., a young Black man wearing a leather jacket, a black Sacramento Kings cap, and two medallions, possibly made of leather, showing Africa. He has a wary, suspicious look on his face. He is outside, possibly in a park somewhere. Behind him is a statue of I'm guessing Jesus, but wearing a crown, holding an orb, and a staff in the other hand. He's is on an orb-shaped pedastal that reads "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."

Conspicuously missing:

#32 Throwing Muses, HUNKPAPA (lost to #97 The D.O.C., NO ONE CAN DO IT BETTER, 99-83)

#29 XTC, ORANGES AND LEMONS (lost to #36 The Cult, SONIC TEMPLE, 91-86)

#26 Bob Mould, WORKBOOK (lost to #39 Jungle Brothers, DONE BY THE FORCES OF NATURE, 82-63-2)

#24 The Replacements, DON’T TELL A SOUL (lost to #41 Mekons, THE MEKONS ROCK N’ ROLL, 81-79-1)

#23 Indigo Girls, INDIGO GIRLS (lost to #42 The Wedding Present, BIZARRO, 91-89)
