#343 Best Album of 1989 Tournament: Week #18 Wrap-Up

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

Work is done, Bob. Pop Will Eat Itself, you been et. Indigo Girls, you’re closer to fin. You’ve been deposed, Queen. Michael, MARCH on outta here.

An exciting week! We had two upsets, as #39 DONE BY THE FORCES OF NATURE defeated #26 WORKBOOK (by a decent margin, too; 19 votes) and #42 BIZARRO just squeaked past #23 INDIGO GIRLS by 2 little votes. I hinted last week that I saw some potential upsets, and these were the two I was talking about. (I also thought KEY LIME PIE vs. MARCH might be close; that one not so much.) (Second aside: these insights only come to me once the matches start, not before, so my Prediction Bracket isn’t great. That said, apparently I foresaw the WORKBOOK upset several months ago. Yay me!) Looking towards next week, I see some matches that I think might be closer than expected, but no actual upsets. I will say that I think WRONG is the best choice to go up against 11-seed 13 SONGS. I won’t lie, I’d like to see them pull off the upset — it’s my second most favorite of 1989 — but I wouldn’t put any money on it.

THE BEST ALBUM OF 1989 PREDICTION BRACKET TOP 20

Two upsets usually means a shake-up in the Top 20 — who saw it coming? Who got blindsided? So our top two remain the same: CORNY stays at #1 for a fourth week, and Breathe! Breathel Breathe! Breathe, You Bracket! is again at #2, despite each bracket missing one match. But jumping up 5 big notches to #3 is PRETTY much HATE tin MACHINE, which got every match right last week. Great job! BUT! They were not the biggest mover on the chart this week. That honor goes to i Doolittle Deep Listening, which rockets up 12(!) notches to land back in the top ten at #8 after getting every match right.. (That still wasn’t their highest position to date, so no blue rectangle for them.) We have two debuts this week, both re-debuts: style. class. love technique., last seen in Week #4, arrives back at #18, and 6 Feet High and Drivin' N' Cryin’, last seen back in Week #2, is also at #18.

The biggest droppers this week were Partyman's Revenge and Drink Milk, both falling five spots to #13 and #16, respectively. We had two (re)debuts, and this week we lost three brackets: That one Turtles sample that got De La in trouble (last week #20), I'II Believe in My Bracket (Or I'II Be Leavin' You Tonight) (last week #17), and Deep Dark Truthful Bracket (last week #15). Hope to see you all again soon!
