#339 The Best Album of 1989, Round 2 Match #87: The B-52’s vs. Pop Will Eat Itself

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

First pic: A photograph of the B-52's, tinted with a rainbow of colors, red to yellow to green to blue. They are arranged from left to right, in performance. First is Keith Strickland, a young white man with longish New Wavey hair, playing guitar and smiling. Second is Cindy Wilson, a young white woman wearing a bowler-shaped hat and a very long braid going down her shoulder to her waist. She wears a sparkly coat and is playing a bongo and singing. Third is Fred Schneider, a young white man with short hair, in a suit and tie, holding a microphone in a stand, and facing Cindy, singing to her. Last but not least is Kate Pierson, who has very big red hair that frames her face like a circle. She is wearing a shimmering dress and is singing into a microphone on a stand, and is facing (a presumed) audience. Second pic: I'll do my best with this one. So, the background is black save for the silhouette of the continents of the world, which are filled with black stars. In front of that, in a circle in the middle, is the nuclear radiation sign. The numbers 1 through 12 are around it, forming a clock, and by a white wedge in the circle, it looks like it's a few minutes to midnight. Emerging from the circle, and arranged around it, are five blue grey robots. These robots are formed using the letters P, W, E, I, arranged one on top of the other, so that the P is the head, the W is the body, the E are the legs, and the I are the feet. Finally, in between each pair of robots is a small pink silhouette of a sattelite, also emerging from the circle.

I was supposed to provide a Designated Cheerleader for THIS IS THE DAY... THIS IS THE HOUR... THIS IS THIS!, but life conspired against me. It’s my favorite album of 1989, and it’s difficult to communicate why, regardless how many words I have to spend on the task. Basically, it’s a soundtrack tailor-made for a 80s kid who grew up on comics (particularly UK ones), hiphop, industrial music, SF, and lived in the shadow of nuclear armageddon. (Possibly one way to describe it is that it was for me what DELTRON 3030 was for some in 2000.) It’s also part of the “Mount Rushmore” of early sample-crazy hiphop music, alongside PAUL’S BOUTIQUE and 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING, where it felt like you never knew what crazy bit of sound was going to pop up next. (I recall how delighted I was when Genesis’ beat for “Mama” showed up out of the blue, PWEI confirming my suspicion that that shit hit hard.) Anyway, I’ll ask you to vote for THIS IS THE DAY…, and while I know it has no chance of winning, my hope is that it, like Wire’s IBTABA, makes a strong showing and goes out with pride.
