#225 Round 1 of the Mini-Tournament Results + Round 2!

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

We now have the winners of the 1st round of the Best Album of 1989 Mini-Tournament. Voters were asked to rank up to three albums out of eight; 1st place votes got 3 points, 2nd place got 2, 3rd place votes got 1. The top three based on points were chosen to advance; two albums tied for third place, and both are entered into Round 2. In Round 2, you will pick one of them to enter into the full tournament. Here are your albums:

The Creatures, BOOMERANG [186 points]

Xymox, TWIST OF SHADOWS [173 points]

Keith Jarrett, CHANGELESS [151 points]

Caetano Veloso, ESTRANGEIRO [151 points]

Voting is now open; click this link to go to the Google Form.

Here is how the voting for Round 1 turned out:

Ignore those columns in yellow for 4th place etc. I just copy/pasted my spreadsheet from the poll asking how I should determine the final album entered, which is how we got here.

The Creatures’ BOOMERANG got 19 1st place votes and 17 3rd place votes, which put it in first place for 1st choice and second place (but really close to first) for 3rd choice. The moral of the story appears to be, if half the people really, really like a choice, and half are like, pfff, okay I’ll take it if my first two are out of the running, you get the most points.

Another key part is that I did not force voters to choose a second or third choice if they did not want to. And people took me up on that offer, as you can see above. BOOMERANG got 46 total votes, and START TODAY got 28 total votes. I have no doubt the result would’ve been different if I forced voters to select a second and third choice, even if they didn’t want to. (But I’m glad I did it this way — being forced to vote for something you don’t believe in would suck. [extremely george marsh on “building steam with a grain of salt” huhhuh-huhhuh-huhhuh chuckling])

There are certainly other interesting tidbits and lessons to be gleaned from the chart above, but I’m late enough with this newsletter already and got other stuff to do today. Again, please vote for one of the four remaining albums by clicking on this link. Thank you for voting in Round 2, thank you for voting in Round 1, thank you for all of your support for all things Best Album!
