#222 Survey Results! And a Decision! Of Sorts!
Hey folks!

So in case you missed it, yesterday I set up a survey on Google Forms to get your input on how to choose the last album to be entered into the Best Album of 1989 tournament. The choices were Mini-Tournament, Give It To Someone, Give It to a Random Someone, Keep It for Myself (Editor’s Choice), or a New Game (like the Guessing Game). Respondents were asked to rank these, from first choice to last choice. I then put the results into a spreadsheet, weighted first choices votes as 5 points each, second choice votes as 4 points each, and so on down the line. Here are the results:

In case you can’t read that for whatever reason, it looks like this:
Mini-Tournament: [1st] 42 votes [2nd] 15 [3rd] 6 [4th] 15 [5th] 13, total points: 331
Give it to Someone: [1st] 7 [2nd] 16 [3rd] 22 [4th] 16 [5th] 30, total points: 227
Give it to a Random Someone: [1st] 10 [2nd] 20 [3rd] 18 [4th] 30 [5th] 13, total points: 257
Keep it for myself (Editor’s Choice): [1st] 31 [2nd] 24 [3rd] 22 [4th] 12 [5th] 2, total points: 343
New Game: [1st] 1 [2nd] 16 [3rd] 23 [4th] 18 [5th] 33, total points: 207
So, to summarize to the best of my ability: Mini-tournament had the most 1st place votes, but those who didn’t put it first tended to be less enthusiastic. Editor’s Choice had quite a few 1st place votes, but significantly fewer than mini-tournament. Yet it scored better in 1st place through 3rd place, ending up with more total points than mini-tournament. Give it to a Random Someone was like “meh, fine, whatever”, and y’all really didn’t like the idea of me picking someone to give it to or a New Game.
To summarize my summarization: Mini-tournament is very love it or hate it, while Editor’s Choice has broad, if slightly less enthusiastic, support across the board.
Now: what to do with that?
I think what I’m going to do is combine the top two results: a Mini-tournament with an extremely narrow range of choices — that’s where the Editor’s Choice comes in. (Originally, the mini-tournament was going to be for all the albums that got 9 nomination votes, 24 in all; I’m saying it won’t be that large of a pool.) Now, even within those parameters, there’s lots of different ways I could do that. And honestly, I haven’t decided how to do it yet.
Nevertheless, tomorrow night (or earlier), I will announce what we’re doing it, how we’re doing it, and when (probably Monday May 5th).
A reminder that we will begin seed voting on Monday May 12th, so keep the faith, we’re almost there. Keep listening to those albums! Especially Dog Faced Hermans, EVERYDAY TIMEBOMB and After Dinner, PARADISE OF REPLICA!
Thanks,
Kent
