#220 Guessing Game winner, and two albums entered into the 1989 tournament!

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

The Choices of Champions.

Last night, we had the Guessing Game on Bluesky, where people took guesses at the top four nomination vote getters, in the right order. This contest can sometimes take a little time — at least one time it went well over an hour. Well, not this time. When I started the game, I instantly got nearly 15 or more responses, and the very first one was nearly correct. (Sorry @hellonfriscobay.bsky.social!) But within that first minute, the correct guess came in, courtesy of @edwar.bsky.social:

  1. Pixies, DOOLITTLE (98 nomination votes)

  2. De La Soul, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING (89 nomination votes)

  3. Beastie Boys, PAUL’S BOUTIQUE (82 nomination votes) + The Cure, DISINTEGRATION (82 nomination votes)

Congratulations again to @edwar.bsky.social!

Our winner’s pick is After Dinner, PARADISE OF REPLICA.

A woman of Asian descent, kneels on a purple pillow. She wears a floral skirt, what looks like a sequined vest, and long white gloves. She looks up to the right, with her hand extended as if offering something, but there is nothing in her hand. Behind her is one of those folding panel-things that you dress behind, sorry can't think of what they're called. It is covered in reflective gold tile, and there are lots of pictures cut out and place on it: a red fish, part of military fighter jet, some black birds, some green birds, a model of the solar system, a volcano (possilby Mount Fuji). This all on a bright orange background.

Also, the winner of the Best Album of 2000 bracket prediction contest gets to add an album to the 1989 bracket. The winner, SpimTobley, has chosen Dog Faced Hermans, EVERYDAY TIMEBOMB.

A black and white photo of the ground, with two shadows across the ground. Shadow on the left appears to be a woman, carrying a bag and holding a hand to her brow, possibly to block out the light. On the right is a shadow of a man, who I believe is holding out the camera that is taking the picture. It looks like his head is missing?

So, this next part is very important, so I’m going to put it in big bold type:

PLEASE LISTEN TO BOTH OF THESE ALBUMS (PLUS THE SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED THIRD) BEFORE MAY 12TH SO YOU KNOW IF YOU WANT TO GIVE THEM A SEED VOTE!

(Technically, you should have heard all 127 albums before the seed voting, but please give your attention to these late additions that you probably have never heard.)

(Also, both of these albums are only about 30m long! Listen while doing chores or taking a walk or something.)

Finally, about that last album. I have not decided how that last album will be picked. We could do a mini-tournament of the albums that got 9 nomination votes, I could give it to someone at random, I could pick someone to give it to, I could claim it for myself as an Editor’s Choice. If there was a mini-tournament, it would start this Monday, May 5th, and would end ideally by Friday, May 9th. Anyway, I really should have it figured out in the next 24 hours or else there’s gonna be problems. If you have an opinion on this, let me know!

Now get listenin’.

Re: the last album, whichever method makes it most likely that UT makes the bracket works for me

Hey everyone, not just Mike:

You’d think when I flicked the switch to have comments, that I’d get alerted whenever one was posted. I do not! Or at least I’m not sure how to make it so. So if you’ve left comments before, I probably have not seen them. Sorry!

Then to Mike (let’s see if he gets an alert about comments):

Are you referring to Ut, GRILLER?

I just realized I didn’t hit “reply” so no, Mike may not see this.
