#23 The Best Album of 2000 Run-Off Tournament Match #6: Duster or Modest Mouse?

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

First off, an apology. How this is supposed to work is that on Saturday, you would get a newsletter announcing the winner of Friday’s match, and then a schedule for the next week. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen due to being unusually busy this last weekend; fortunately, I don’t foresee it happening again.

Here is the schedule for the week of Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 7:

Date

Match

Monday June 3

Duster, CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT vs Modest Mouse, BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING

Tuesday June 4

Crooked Fingers, CROOKED FINGERS vs 16 Horsepower, SECRET SOUTH

Wednesday June 5

The For Carnation, THE FOR CARNATION vs Phoenix, UNITED

Thursday June 6

Papa Roach, INFEST vs Amon Tobin, SUPERMODIFIED

Friday June 7

Lemon Jelly, LEMONJELLY.KY vs The Apples in Stereo, THE DISCOVERY OF A WORLD INSIDE THE MOONE

The fifth match of the Best Album of 2000 Run-Off has concluded and the winner is:

Super Furry Animals, MWNG

Super Furry Animals, MWNG. Llongyfarchiadau, Super Furry Animals!

MWNG defeated Limp Bizkit’s CHOCOLATE STARFISH AND THE HOT DOG FLAVORED WATER, 74-28. MWNG advances in the tournament and will be seen next up against Duster’s CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT or Modest Mouse’s BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING.

Speaking of which…

Time now for today’s match:

Duster, CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT vs Modest Mouse, BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING

Modest Mouse, BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING

KENT’S KORNER

A scene from George Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978).

Upset that CHOCOLATE STARFISH was eliminated? Have no fear! We now have Modest Mouse up, and they’re the same band as Limp Bizkit. (In-joke! Best not ask.)

I will say this for CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT: after a single listen, I think I liked it better than previous Duster albums I’ve heard, and I could see it moving up to Like with more listens. Unfortunately, there is, to date, literally no album from 2000 that could beat BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING for me. Wish I had time to write up a real Designated Cheerleader for this; let me just say that as the first MM album I heard, it immediately made me a fan, and took me on a meaningful emotional journey, despite (or because?) it is a compilation of b-sides. Which I assume is what we want, at best, an album to do. If its status as a compilation precludes you from otherwise voting for it, you must vote your conscience. But I suggest to you that it should not matter.

CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT: Interesting/Like

BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING: Love
