#217 The Best Album of 1989 - The First 125 Albums

Best Album Brackets Logo #2.jpg

Hey folks!

If you’re reading this, then we have just finished posting on Bluesky the parade of the first 125 albums entered into the upcoming Best Album of 1989. If you missed it, or you were there when it happened but need a permanent list, well, here you go.

All links go to either Spotify (most of them) or YouTube (a handful), and two of them go to Dropbox download pages (see the notes in the captions). Some of these links go to compilation albums and you will have to reconstruct the album yourself; again, check the notes in the captions.

I was going to include information on Wednesday’s Guessing Game here, but that will come in a later newsletter.

And with that, here are the first 125 albums entered into the Best Album of 1989 tournament!

10,000 Maniacs, BLIND MAN'S ZOO

The cover is broken into five vertical panels on the top and five vertical panels on the bottom, separated by a long horizontal panel in the middle. The panel in the middle is red and reads "10,000 Maniac Blind Man's Zoo." Each of the panels in the upper and lower sections has a different picture of an elephant. Some are close up, some show elephants in a line, one has an elephant in a harness lifted into the air, one is a drawing.

3rd Bass, THE CACTUS ALBUM

A picture of MC Serch on the left and Prime Minister Pete Nice on the right, both of 3rd Bass. MC Serch has his back to us. He is tinted green and has tall curly hair that has been shaved on the sides. On the back of his head/neck "3rd Bass" has been shaved into his hair. Pete Nice is tinted purple and is facing us. His mouth is obscured by the big cigar he's holding in his mouth. The background is dark orange.

808 State, 90

The album has a grey background. On the top in large lettering is "808" in dark blue/purple. On the bottom is ": 90." The 90 is in dark pink. The two boxes of the : have pictures in them. The lower one shows a photo of an orange fish on a blue background. The top box is difficult to make out. It looks like a purple ring on a black background, perhaps a photo of an eclipse.

Aerosmith, PUMP

The cover shows a photo of a 1940s "International K Series" truck with a smaller version of the truck on top of it. The smaller truck has "PUMP" written on the driver's side door. The picture subltly suggests that the two vehicles are having intercourse.

Laurie Anderson, STRANGE ANGELS

A black and white photo fo Laurie Anderson, a white woman with short spiky dark hair. Her eyes are closed, her head titled at a slight angle to the left, and her hand is gently touching her throat.

The B-52’s, COSMIC THING

A photograph of the B-52's, tinted with a rainbow of colors, red to yellow to green to blue. They are arranged from left to right, in performance. First is Keith Strickland, a young white man with longish New Wavey hair, playing guitar and smiling. Second is Cindy Wilson, a young white woman wearing a bowler-shaped hat and a very long braid going down her shoulder to her waist. She wears a sparkly coat and is playing a bongo and singing. Third is Fred Schneider, a young white man with short hair, in a suit and tie, holding a microphone in a stand, and facing Cindy, singing to her. Last but not least is Kate Pierson, who has very big red hair that frames her face like a circle. She is wearing a shimmering dress and is singing into a microphone on a stand, and is facing (a presumed) audience.

Bad Religion, NO CONTROL

On a black background, in large letters, the cover reads "Bad Religion No Control." Within the letters can be seen another picture, full of different colors: red, yellow, green, dark pink, light pink, blue, orange. It's possible this picture is of a painted canvas, or possibly graffiti.

Beastie Boys, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE

A photograph of a street corner in New York. There is a store called Paul's Boutique on the corner, as indicated by the sign that hangs over the sidewalk to the left. Above the store is a tall brick edifice, presumably apartments. On the sidewalk are clothes hanging from awning as a display, as well as a table with all sorts of objects on it, but difficult to identify any one object. There are two additional signs on the building, just below the brick edifice: "Lee's Sportswear" and "Ben's Shoes."

Beat Happening, BLACK CANDY

A blackboard. In chalk, "Black Candy" is written on the top and "beat happening" on the bottom. In the middle is a loose sketch of a square piece of candy in a wrapper. It has a sprial shape in the middle of it.

The Beautiful South, WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH

On a blue green background are two sepia-toned photographs, each in a square the same exact size and placed right next to each other, as if to compare them. In the first, a white woman in a kind of Sunday dress and hat holds an enormous handgun, possibly a 44 magnum, with two hands. It is in her mouth and her thumb is on the trigger. She faces the left. In the second photo, a shirtless man with a shaved head lights a cigarette in his mouth. He faces the right.

Blake Babies, EARWIG

A drawing of a small village painted in watercolor earth tones: brown, copper, adobe red, grey-green. A winding path goes between several houses and trees and bushes. There are a few flowers on the ground -- white circles with orange centers, like eggs.

The Blue Nile, HATS

A blue tinted photograph of someone from the back, from the neck up. They are wearing a hat. The lighting turns the figure almost into a silhouette. It's possible the person is a woman with their hair tucked under the hat, but it's impossible to say. On the small of their back is a patch of light that makes a small red crescent shape.

Boogie Down Productions, GHETTO MUSIC: THE BLUEPRINT OF HIP HOP

A Black man in black shirt, black pants, black shoes, black baseball cap and sunglasses sits on a stoop. Standing above him is a cop, but we only see him from behind and from the back down. The Black man is gesturing with his left hand, the cop is pointing at him with his right. There is the suggestion that they are having a conversation, possibly lecturing each other? But the cop has a baton in his right hand, suggesting that only one of them has state violence on their side.

Kate Bush, THE SENSUAL WORLD

A black and white photo of Kate Bush, a white woman with dark hair and large eyes. She holds a rose in front of her mouth, obscuring it.

Camper Van Beethoven, KEY LIME PIE

A extremely blurry photograph of three smiling people, presumably members of Camper Van Beethoven. They appear to be standing in front of some kind of statue, but the picture is so blurry and overexposed and manipulated that I'm not sure what it is or even if it's really there. The overall color of the photo is an extremely light brown-orange.

Cardiacs, ON LAND AND IN THE SEA

The cover is (I believe) a photo collage. Most of the left of the picture is a phot of an outside scene, a large leafless tree with many many branches in the middle of a grassy field. Just beyond there are more trees and bushes. Superimposed over this on the right side are pictures of six people, five white men and one whie woman. The men wear jackets and ties, the woman a black dress. The colors are desaturated. One of the men has a black bar over his eyes and something written in white print on it, but I can't make out what it is. Presumably these are the band members.

Tracy Chapman, CROSSROADS

A slightly sepia-toned photo of Tracy Chapman, a young Black woman with short dreadlocks, sittng on sand. She holds her ankles. She wears a sleeveless black shirt, black pants, and is barefoot. Her eyes are closed, as if thinking hard or maybe just really really experiencing the sun reflecting on her.

Cher, HEART OF STONE

A painting of Cher sitting next to a large heart-shaped stone. Cher is wearing a white dress that is cinched at the waist, creating a number of folds. The stone heart has a series of cracks running through it. With the way everything is arranged, it creates the image of a skull: the stone heart is the head part of the skull, Cher's face makes the eye, and the cinched folds of her dress make the teeth.

Neneh Cherry, RAW LIKE SUSHI

A color photograph of a young Black woman with her hair pulled back, her arms crossed, and wearing loads of bracelets and a very large medallion. She has a very.. angry? disappointed? smug? look on her face. It's very intense, regardless. The background is blank white.

Ciccone Youth, THE WHITEY ALBUM

An extremely close up black and white picture of Madonna or someone who looks like her -- it may even be a blowup of a photocopy of a picture. All we can see is her nose, the bottom of her right eye, her lips, two of her fingers (with painted nails) holding her chin and cheek, and her lipstick'd lips.

Concrete Blonde, FREE

So this is five drawings on a black background with hand-drawn stars. There are four figures across the horizontal section, and one below that. Each of the first four figures is reminiscent of the kings, queen, jacks of playing cards, but they have a kind of ancient Babylonian feel. (My apologies for not knowing the culture of the figures in the drawings.) The first one has a hat and shoulder length hair, and a scorpion tail. The second are two king-like people, facing away from each other but enjoined at the back. The third is I think a woman, holding a sword. The fourth has a crown like a king on aplying card, but his lower half appears to be a lion; he holds up his right arm/paw and holds his tail with his left paw. Below them is a cherub-type figure, arms outstretched.

Elvis Costello, SPIKE

Elvis Costello, with his trademark thick-rimmed black glasses, his head poking through a shield-shaped plaque. Within the shield, his head is surrouned by blue ruffles of some kind of fabric. Costello looks like a harlequin; half his face is painted black, the other half white. The black side has a white strip horizontally over his eye, and his lips are painted white as well. On the white side, his lips are painted red. He smiles maniacally. The plaque has a plaid background. The plaque is labeled "THE BELOVED ENTERTAINER."

Julee Cruise, FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT

A blurry image of a naked pink Barbie-like doll, apparently floating in pure darkness. The doll is somewhat small compared to amount of darkness around it, as if it is being engulfed by the darkness. Would it surprise you to know David Lynch shot this? It shouldn't.

The Cult, SONIC TEMPLE

A photo of guitarist Billy Duffy, a white guy with long hair that completely covers his face. He's shirtless save a vest, and wears leather pants. He's taking a triumphant pose, with one hand pointed in the air, the other hand on the neck of the guitar, and his legs spread out -- he forms a kind of triangle shape. This is in front of a heavily distorted close up of singer Ian Astbury, his head thrown back and a microphone in his hand. This picture of him is almost totally in red, with some green highlights.

The Cure, DISINTEGRATION

We see the face of The Cure singer Rober Smith, with pale white skin, black hair, black eyeshadow, and red lips. (He's one of the most Gothiest men alive.) Around him are images of flowers. The photo has a sense of distortion, because I believe it's actually a projection onto a wall or another surface.

De La Soul, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING

Black and white photos of three young Black men, arranged in a circle as if you are on the ground and they are looking down at you from above. The background is very bright yellow. There are hand drawn flower shapes in blue and orange arranged around them.

The D.O.C., NO ONE CAN DO IT BETTER

A color photograph of The D.O.C., a young Black man wearing a leather jacket, a black Sacramento Kings cap, and two medallions, possibly made of leather, showing Africa. He has a wary, suspicious look on his face. He is outside, possibly in a park somewhere. Behind him is a statue of I'm guessing Jesus, but wearing a crown, holding an orb, and a staff in the other hand. He's is on an orb-shaped pedastal that reads "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."

The Durutti Column, VINI REILLY

A sharp, well-executed black and white photograph of The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly (yes he named the album after himself.) The photo is a close-up, from the shoulders up. Reilly has a very long thin angular face, with long thick brown bangs crowning his head. He has thin lips and a cleft chin. He looks to the right with his hand holding up his head. He has a thoughtful look on his face.

Bob Dylan, OH MERCY

A photograph of a painting/mural on a brick wall. On the left is a white woman with dark hair, a kind of 40s hairstyle, in a yellow blouse and red skirt. The woman has her right arm across her chest, pointing to her left shoulder. On the right is a man in a grey suit, white shirt and yellow tie. His hair is dark, and a bit long on top, kind of New Wavey. He wears glasses and his head is turned away from the woman. Are they dancing? Is he rejecting her? (The woman has a vaguely forlorn expression on her face.) It's ambiguous.

Eleventh Dream Day, BEET

A rough painting of a red beet on a background that's been divided horizontally, black on the bottom, and orange on the top. The top of the beet extends into stems and one giant leaf, and the "veins" of the leaf spell out "BEET."
This link goes to a Dropbox page.

EPMD, UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Two young Black men, dressed in identical loose-fitting grey clothing, white sneakers and white kangol hats, each sit on the hood of a car. They look at the camera. The cars are parked facing each other at an angle. Beyond them is the ocean.

Faith No More, THE REAL THING

A circular pie-tin shape, like the ring created when a drop water hits a surface, with crown-like protrusions around the edge of it. Inside the shape is a column of fire. Behind the image is a picture that suggests the cracked dry surface of a desert or even volcanic landscape, but also the branches of trees. What it actually is eludes me.

The Field Mice, SNOWBALL

A pink background. In a white font the name of the band, the album, and tracks are listed from top to bottom: The Field Mice, Snowball, Let's Kiss and Make Up, You're Kidding Aren't You, End of the Affair, Couldn't Feel Safer, This Love is Not Wrong, Everything About You, White, Letting Go. At the bottom it reads MADE IN ENGLAND, DISTRIBUTED BY REVOLVER/CARTEL, SARAH 402.

Fine Young Cannibals, THE RAW & THE COOKED

A black and white photo of, one the left, a young Black man, with narrow eyes, slightly pursed lips, and a widow's peak. On the right, two pasty white guys with short hair. Behind the picture are a mass of grey shapes that suggest letters made out of horshoes, but aren't letters or horseshoes.

Fugazi, 13 SONGS

A red background. At the top in black reads "FUGAZI" and along the bottom in the same font "13 SONGS."

Peter Gabriel, PASSION

A really terrific mixed media portrait of (I presume) Jesus. On a white background with lots of dark smears (from coal?), is the outline of a figure, from the back up. The figure is turned away from us at an angle, but we get their profile. There are no details to the face; instead, the paper where the face has been outlined is black from ink, paint, coal, and maybe even burned a little bit. One spot where an eye would be is blot of red, probably paint but I'm not sure. There are tiny bits of flowers on the outline of the figure. There is a stick laid across the face of the figure that goes across their back as well. This could represent a whip, or possibly a crown of thorns? It's incredibly striking.

Galaxie 500, ON FIRE

A photograph of the band, taken from a low angle on the ground looking up at them. They're dressed in T-shirts. There's a guy with a round face and longish light-colored hair, a woman in a dark shirt with short dark hair and large spiral earrings, and another guy with short moussed hair in a white t shirt. The whole thing is orange-tinted. A great deal of the picture is the sky above the three, and the sky is orange.

Gang Starr, NO MORE MR. NICE GUY

Two young Black men looking at the camera on a totally white background. They are facing each other, but one is slightly in front of the other, and both are leaning back away from each other. Their arms are crossed. They both wear black hats, sweater-like shirts, and one has black sunglasses and what looks like baggy leather pants.

Godflesh, STREETCLEANER

A still from the movie ALTERED STATES. It shows the black blurry silhouettes of several people being crucified, superimposed over what looks like bubbling bursting orange and yellow lava.

Emmylou Harris, BLUEBIRD

Emmylou Harris, a white woman with dark hair and grey streaks, in front of a large window in a room, her back turned to us. The window is solid white from the light. She wears a dark, possibly purple dress with an open back. She holds out part of her skirt with her left hand, her head turned to look at it. She wears white boots. The walls and floor of the room suggest an old house in need of repair.

Don Henley, THE END OF THE INNOCENCE

A black and white photo of a white man kneeling up against a wall. He's wearing a dark jacket, black jeans and boots. He looks at the camera. A cigarette dangles from his fingers. He has long hair that has been pulled back, but long strands of it fall over his right eye. He looks extremely douchey, like the personifcation of "mansplain."

Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, QUEEN ELVIS

A blue-tinted black and white photograph of Robyn Hitchcock stepping out of a telephone booth. The only source of light is from the booth, everything around is dark. There is a bit of a haunted vibe.

Hoodoo Gurus, MAGNUM CUM LOUDER

A blue drawing of a smiling monkey-skull-like face, with a jeweled-turban and glasses. Below the face are two crossed guitars, making a kind of "skull and bones" picture. Dotted around the gutiars are what I think are supposed to be black roses. A black banner across the bottom reads "MAGNUM CUM LOUDER." All of this is on a yellow background.

Ice-T, THE ICEBERG/FREEDOM OF SPEECH …JUST WATCH WHAT YOU SAY

A very skatepunk/high-school level drawing of a Black man, in a black tank top and black LA Raiders baseball cap, with a shotgun shoved in his mouth, and with a gun pressed against each side of his head. The guns are all held by black-gloved hands. The Black man is sweating profusely, and a tear wells up in his right eye.

Indigo Girls, INDIGO GIRLS

A color photgraph of two white women, Indigo Girls, Amy Ray on the left and Emily Saliers on the right. Ray has shoulder length brown hair and is wearing a crucifix; half her face is cropped out of the shot. Saliers has short blond hair, is lit from the right side, and but otherwise is in darkness.

Inner City, PARADISE

A light-sepia toned photograph of a Black woman and a Black man. They look at the camera. She has long black hair and is turned with her hip towards us and has one arm around his back and the other on his arm. She wears a leather jacket. She has a look of surprise on her face. He has short black hair, sunglasses, and wears a long black leather trenchcoat, with a black shirt underneath. He looks stoic. It is a very MATRIX look, which wouldn't come out for another 10 years.

Chris Isaak, HEART SHAPED WORLD

A black and white photo of Chris Isaak, a stupidly hansome white man, in a white t-shirt and dark pants. He's sitting on a bed in a motel room, his hands outstretched, fingertips touching. Behind him on the right side of the picture is a sink and mirror and some bath towels. He has a pensive expression on his face. It's a heart-shaped world, Chris.

Janet Jackson, JANET JACKSON'S RHYTHM NATION 1814

A black and white photo of Janet Jackson, a beautiful young Black woman, from the shoulders up. She wears a black cap, and a jacket with a military-style collar. The hat and the collar both have a metal plate that read 1814. She wears an a hoop earring with a key attached. She stares off to the right.

Billy Joel, STORM FRONT

A photo of a red canvas flag with a dark purplish cloudy sky in the background. The red flag has a black square in the middle of it.

The Jesus and Mary Chain, AUTOMATIC

An offwhite background with a large star in the middle. Within the star is a blue-green toned photograph of the faces of Jesus and Mary Chain bandmembers Jim Reid and William Reid. They are both pale white men with shaggy dark hair; one wears sungIasses. I don't know which one's Noel and which one's Liam, I don't know know which one's Tegan and which one's Sara, and I don't know which one's Jim and which one's William. And I like it that way.

Jesus Jones, LIQUIDIZER

A blender, tilted to the left, spilling out large amounts of a pink liquid, on a black background. The top of the blender pitcher is flying off.

Jungle Brothers, DONE BY THE FORCES OF NATURE

A colorful drawing of the heads of three young Black men, surrounded by images of the jungle along the bottom (grass, trees, a camel, a lion) and a city skyline above them. Beyond the sklyine is a big purple volcano, erupting. Also above them is a Black fairy-like creature with butterfly wings. Around the edges of the picture are planets.

King’s X, GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA

A black spacefield of stars, but a kind of portal has been punched through it. The edges of the portal suggest wood. Through the portal, we can see three big trees, suggesting a forest. An owl stands on the ground. Beyond the trees is a path that goes through a grassy field towards a desert even further back. On the horizon and in the sky are three moons. The grassy landscape is dotted with groupings of stone monoliths that suggest, or actually could be, tall buildings. I've driven through Nebraska, it doesn't look like this.

Kitchens of Distinction, LOVE IS HELL

Just above the center of the picture is a circle, with a drawing a white woman in a short-sleeved shirt, holding a bouquet and a child with short hair. It has THE ZONE OF INTEREST vibes. The circle is in front of a black cross. In front of the black cross are drawings of four muscular nude men, as if posing for an art class. All of this is on a background of concentric circles that alternate between light blue and sea green.

Lenny Kravitz, LET LOVE RULE

An extreme close up of Lenny Kravitz, a Black man. All we can see are his right eye, his nose, and lips. He looks into the camera. He has a ring piercing his nostril. He might have a piercing elsewhere.

LL Cool J, WALKING WITH A PANTHER

LL Cool J, a young Black man in a grey kangol hat and heavy jacket that may also be part sweater, kneels in a wet alley somewhere. In front of him is a little panther cub with a giant-ass thick gold rope around its neck. Behind both is a black metal-reinforced briefcase with a pair of handcuffs attached to the handle; one of the cuffs is open.

The Lounge Lizards, VOICE OF CHUNK

A color photograph of (I believe) bandleader John Lurie in profile. He is a white man with short brown hair in a widow's peak, with a long flat nose. Behind him is a complex pattern of diamonds and lines, possibly from a rug. He is facing a saxophone, that we can only see the top part of. Below this picture are several rectangles with other pictures. There is a sprig of some kind of flower, possibly lavender. There is a close-up of the diamond pattern from the rug or wall drapery or whatever it is. There is a picture of an eel. Along the bottom are three pictures of the same exact mouth, slightly open and revealing all their teeth.

Love and Rockets, LOVE AND ROCKETS

This one is hard for me to describe. Imagine a chessboard, only warp it so that the squares are more like diamonds, pointing towards the center. Four of the black squares, in the "north," "south," "east" and "west" positions have been warmped into arrows, also pointing towards the center. In the center is a red heart. It's a little more intricate than that but that's the best I can do.

Lyle Lovett, LYLE LOVETT AND HIS LARGE BAND

A blurry black and white photo of Lyle Lovett, a white man with a long face and big floofy dark hair that dips over towards the front of his face. He's wearing a big white suit and dark tie that makes him look like a bandleader from the 20s or something. He looks to the right at something out of frame.

Kirsty MacColl, KITE

A black and white photo of Kirsty MacColl (RIP), a pretty white woman who I believe has red hair. It's just her shoulders and head, and her back is to us, and her head is pointed to the right in profile.

Madonna, LIKE A PRAYER

A close up of Madonna's exposed belly and crotch of her jeans. The top buttons of the jeans are unbuttoned. Madonna's hands are on top of her jeans, her thumbs tucked inside. Two long pieces of jewelry hang (presumably) from her neck, strings with various gems and baubles and rings on them. They probably have Catholic significance but I do not know what. If you want to see Madonna's face, cf. Ciccone Youth, THE WHITEY ALBUM.

Biz Markie, THE BIZ NEVER SLEEPS

On a red background, a Black man is dressed like a stereotypical mad scientist: white lab coat, glasses, a cheap curly wig of white hair. Before him on a table are stereotypical mad scientist chemistry equipment: beakers and test tubes and erlenmeyer flasks full of colored liquid with white gas pouring out of them. The man is holding a green beaker full of green liquid and is exclaiming in surprise.

Paul McCartney, FLOWERS IN THE DIRT

I believe this is a painting with some bricolage added. It looks like a canvas streaked with various shades of orange, some light, some dark, a little bit of black in there as well. It looks like dried yellow flowers and stems have been added to the canvas.

Mekons, THE MEKONS ROCK N' ROLL

So this appears to be a drawing or painting of a white man with dark hair and an intense stare -- it's possible it's supposed to be Elvis Presley. But it is radically obscured by an overlay of colors and patterns. The patterns suggest trees and/or leaves, with various color filters (orange, blue, red) applied.

Ministry, THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE

On a black background, an X-ray of a human skull. There appear to be metal bracers or attachments of some kind within the flesh of the head, two near the nasal area and one on the right side near where the ear would be.

Mötley Crüe, DR. FEELGOOD

A green tile background, suggesting a hospital or perhaps bathroom. Some of the tiles are chipped. In front of this is a combination of caduceus and Rod of Asclepius, with one snake, one stick, and two wings. However, instead of an anodyne snake and stick, the snake is green and threatening, the wings are black bat wings, and the stick is a sword with a red-eyed skull on the hilt.

Bob Mould, WORKBOOK

A photograph of a frame with a number of objects placed within. There's too many things to describe, and I'm not sure what all of them are, but I see some shells, a padlock, a figurine of a deer, some clippings, another figurine of a smiling man waving his arm. Behind the frame are some patterns/textures, one looks like it's made of metal and another is a pattern of leaves that looks like it might be from a couch. The whole image is very light grey and light brown.

Mudhoney, MUDHONEY

A picture of the band (four white guys with long hair in t shirts) standing in front of some windows at night, with blue and pink lights on them.

Peter Murphy, DEEP

A black and white photo of Peter Murphy, a white man with short blond hair in a black leotard, bending at the waist until his head is upside down and facing his crotch. His arms are extended straight up behind him, hands clasped, on the same vertical plane as his head. This is on a blank white background.

Negativland, HELTER STUPID

A mockup of a newspaper article. The top reads "Midwest Slayings Keep The Home" then below that "Negativland's 'House Arrest'". Below that is the text of a four column newspaper article, and nestled between is a screengrab of a TV news segment. There is a news reader on the right, a balding white man in a jacket and tie, and behind him is the picture of a smiling white teenager. Above the teenager it says "KILLER SONG." Across all of this, written in pinkish-red and in a way to suggest it was written with a finger dipped in blood, is HELTER STUPID.

New Order, TECHNIQUE

A color photo of a statue, some kind of cherubic figure, holding some kind of plants, leaves, I think. The lighting on it colors it from dark red to green to blue. The upper part of the background is dark pink, and that turns into dark purple by the bottom.

Nine Inch Nails, PRETTY HATE MACHINE

A digitized photgraph of some kind of machinery. It kinda looks like "Predator Vision" but the colors are blue and pink. It could be the wheelwell of a motorcycle? Maybe an engine? A close up of an indoor fan? No idea.

Nirvana, BLEACH

A black and white negative (creep) image of Nirvana playing (three guitarists and one drummer) all of them banging their heads and making their hair whip around.

Nomeansno, WRONG

What looks like a photo, that has been photocopied as to render black and white and reduce details, of a man wearing a cow or goat mask. He wears a black shirt that is buttoned all the way up.

N.W.A, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

Six young Black men shot from the ground looking up, so they appear to be standing over you. They are arranged in a circle. One of them is pointing a gun at the camera. They all look a little disappointed, like you fucked up and now they have to kill you. Also, please note there is no period after "A" in N.W.A

The Ocean Blue, THE OCEAN BLUE

The left side is mostly taken up with four rectangular boxes, each with a photo of a band member. All the band members are white with blond hair, save one who has brown hair. All the photos are blurry. This is placed upon a greyish background, with a star-like symbol on it, kind of like a compass. This shape is blown up enough so we can't see the full figure of it.

Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, Panaiotis, DEEP LISTENING

On a black background are three rectangles placed in a row horizonally, all of the same picture. It shows... well it could be a forest, with eight tree trunks. But those trunks could also be cement pylons, and based on the light from above, this could be underwater. In conclusion, I don't know. The pictures are tinted dark orange.

Operation Ivy, ENERGY

A pen and ink line drawing of an all-black figure wearing a fedora-type hat, moving into action, possibly dancing. Around him are a number of images, including a hand holding a pool cue, an eye, a tree, some desert-y hills or mountains, some television screens showing weird Cronenbergian body horror, a mouth full of teeth.
This link goes to the compilation Operation Ivy. To hear the album Energy, listen to tracks 1-19 only.

Roy Orbison, MYSTERY GIRL

A black and white photo of Roy Orbison, a white man with dark sunglasses. It's a close up of his face, with a hand next to it. This photo occupies the upper left side; on the lower right, is the same photo but upside down.

Michael Penn, MARCH

This is a painting. In the middle is a kind of beige parchment with "Michael Penn" and "MARCH" on it. On either side of the parchment are two figures. On the left is a woman with bird wings holding an hour glass. On the right is a bald man, also possibly with wings, holding a red drum and a drumstick; he has a slightly sinister, even demonic, look on his face. They are sitting on a white fabric that suggests snow.

Pere Ubu, CLOUDLAND

The façade of what I believe to be a carnival attraction: the awning is a series of pointy shapes, in yellow, pink, red, and orange, and all the shapes are outlined with (unlit) lightbulbs. The angle is low, and great deal of blue sky is seen to the right and up.
This link goes to a Dropbox page.

Tom Petty, FULL MOON FEVER

A photo of Tom Petty, a skinny white guy with a long narrow face, playing a guitar. He has an odd look on his face; he may be biting his lip? The photo is tinted rainbow style, going from red at the top to yellow (which covers most of Petty's body), to blue at the bottom.

Pixies, DOOLITTLE

On a brown background is a monotone photo of a small monkey. The monkey has a halo and is surrounded by three numbers: 5,6 and 7. The picture of the monkey has a green outline of a box around it, and within that box are green lines that make a bunch of connected shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, stars, trapezoids. etc.

Pizzicato Five, BY HER MAJESTY'S REQUEST

A color photograph of a nude blonde woman on her stomach, facing the right, her chin sitting on her palms, words painted on her skin. The light from above colors her red.

The Pogues, PEACE AND LOVE

A sepia-toned photo of a young white boxer, facing the camera, in boxing pose but no boxing gloves. He has short dark hair and wears only boxer shorts. The photo looks as if it's from the 40s or 50s. He has "Peace" and "Love" tattooed on his fingers. This means his one fist was photoshopped to add a sixth finger.

Pop Will Eat Itself, THIS IS THE DAY... THIS IS THE HOUR... THIS IS THIS!

I'll do my best with this one. So, the background is black save for the silhouette of the continents of the world, which are filled with black stars. In front of that, in a circle in the middle, is the nuclear radiation sign. The numbers 1 through 12 are around it, forming a clock, and by a white wedge in the circle, it looks like it's a few minutes to midnight. Emerging from the circle, and arranged around it, are five blue grey robots. These robots are formed using the letters P, W, E, I, arranged one on top of the other, so that the P is the head, the W is the body, the E are the legs, and the I are the feet. Finally, in between each pair of robots is a small pink silhouette of a sattelite, also emerging from the circle.

Prefab Sprout, PROTEST SONGS

A red-tinged monotone photograph of a person that I think is Wendy Smith of Prefab Sprout but not absolutely sure. The photo is from the shoulders up, and she is wearing a lacy, kind of old fashioned dress. She looks off to the left, a bit distant, a bit sad.

The Primitives, PURE

A color photograph of two members of The Primitives, both looking at the camera. One is a white man with short black hair, an earring, and necklace made of metal butterfly shapes. He is close to the camera and the left side of his face is cropped off. To the right and behind him is a white woman with red hair in a white dress. Her left arm is wrapped around her waist and her right arm is lifted so she's touching her right shoulder with her right hand. The background is white.

Prince, BATMAN

It's the Batman logo as used in the 1989 film, an oval with a bat shape inside it. The bat is black, everything around it is gold and there are glints on it, as if made of metal. The logo is zoomed in a bit so it's cut off on the left and right edges.

Queen Latifah, ALL HAIL THE QUEEN

It's Queen Latifah! She's a tall, strong, proud sexy Black woman wearing a black uniform, slightly miltaristic in the Janet Jackson RHYTHM NATION way. The background is blank white.

Bonnie Raitt, NICK OF TIME

A photograph of Bonnie Raitt, a lean white woman with big curly reddish brown hair with a slight streak of white on the front. She's dressed in black, possibly leather, and the shirt underneath has a tiger pattern print. She's smiling. Slung around her shoulder is her guitar, but the guitar is on her hip and mostly cut out of the picture, so we only really see the strap, which looks vaguely like snake skin. One hand is on the guitar, and the other is on her giant metal circular belt buckle. The belt buckle has a red-brown circle in the middle, and she has her finger on it, like pressing a button.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, MOTHERS MILK

A photo of a nude white woman from the waist up; she has dark hair, and cradles in her arms the tiny members of Red Hot Chili Peppers, a bunch of white guys who smell of crank and seaweed. Singer Anthony Kiedis is standing, which covers the woman's left nipple and then there's a pink rose covering the other one because why bother with consistency.

Lou Reed, NEW YORK

A black and white photo of five Lou Reeds, standing near a brick wall and sidewalk. They're all white guyswith black hair who emanate New York cool. Starting from the left: one is in a black wifebeater and sunglasses and looks at the camera, his arms crossed defiantly. The next two are looking to the left; they wear hats and dark jackets. The fourth has his back to us; he wears a hat and sunglasses. The fifth is facing us but is focused on lighting the cigarette in his mouth. He wears sunglasses, a long black jacket, and blue jeans with a belt.

Steve Reich, DIFFERENT TRAINS/ELECTRIC COUNTERPOINT

A brown-tinted photo of railroad tracks. There are five of them, each right next to each other, and arranged vertically from the top of the frame to the bottom. The idea is also to suggest the frets of a guitar, as half the album is about trains and the other half is a composition just for guitar.

The Replacements, DON’T TELL A SOUL

A black and white high contrast close up photo of Paul Westerberg, a white guy. He's looking at the camera and has one hand placed in front of his mouth. His eyelids are droopy. His hair blends into the blackness of the background.

The Rolling Stones, STEEL WHEELS

A arrangement of black circles that suggest vinyl albums and also the "steel wheels" of the title. There's six going horizontally across the top, five across the middle, and five across the bottom. There's also a stylized stripe across from one record to the other, suggesting an S, presumably for "Stones" or "Steel." It's possible the album is supposed to suggest the cover of The Rolling Stones' SOME GIRLS, which if so, lol.

Screaming Trees, BUZZ FACTORY

A photgraph of a waterside or riverside factory, a flat building along the bottom with some smokestacks emerging from the top. One smokestack bellows black smoke. Beyojd the factory are two water towers. The sky and water are tinted orange and the buildings are tinted purple.

Sepultura, BENEATH THE REMAINS

A painting of a human skull, missing the jaw, done in a way to suggest red lighting, but with many surrealistic touches, including but not limited to: there are roses in the top of the skull, the suggestion of the sun's reflection, cactus or fungi growing out of the side, a screaming bat in the forehead. It appears there is an intact eye in one of the sockets. The top of the skull has a large cracked gap in it, and smoke is wisping out. The intended emotion is dread and horror, and it succeeds.

Skid Row, SKID ROW

A black and white photo of the band on a sidewalk in front of a brick wall. The bottom of the wall, where it meets the sidewalk, is illuminated - the suggestion of car headlights perhaps? The ground is wet. The band members look in different directions.

Skinny Puppy, RABIES

The background is a series of red and off-red concentric circles, and it just now occurs to me that it might be the "That's All, Folks!" sign-off at the end of old Warner Bros. cartoons. Pasted over that are a series of rectangles grouped together like comic book frames. Each rectangle has a different picture in it. Some of them I can't identify, but the ones I can: a yellow-toned picture of Charles Manson with a white rectangle over his eyes; a photo of Adolf Hitler; an orange tinted photo of people holding up a large banner written in I believe Chinese -- Tianenmen Square?; the German word "Ja"; a comic book-style lettering of the word "SPLATT!"

Slint, TWEEZ

A black and white photo of a car taken from directly in front of it. It's close enough that it takes up most of the frame. The car is a Saab 900 S, a small, boxy kind of car. There is a figure in the driver's seat but the reflections of the trees in the windshield obscure their identity. (It's musician Will Oldham of Bonnie "Prince" Billy.) The dirt road and leafless branches on either side suggest a country road. The words "SLINT" AND "TWEEZ" are on the grille of the car.

The Smithereens, 11

A giant red "11" takes up most of the cover. Superimposed on the first 1 are the band, four white guys walking. Along the bottom is the silhouette of a running man, a series of positions like a zoetrope. He appears to be running towards pen and ink drawings of Las Vegas-style hotels. It only now occurs to me that maybe this is an oblique reference to the original OCEAN'S 11 film.

Soul II Soul, CLUB CLASSICS VOL. ONE a.k.a. KEEP ON MOVIN'

A yellow-tinted black and white photo of Soul II Soul bandleader Jazzie B, from the waist up. He's a Black man wearing a vest and a necklace with Africa on it. He has dreadlocks, and they're mostly tied up out of is face save for a few strands falling across his face. He is the anti-Don Henley. He appears to be pumping his fist. He looks to the right with a blank expression.

Soundgarden, LOUDER THAN LOVE

A black and white photo of singer Chris Cornell (RIP), on stage, in the middle of singing into a microphone and possibly head-banging. He is shirtless and wears jeans and a black belt. His head is facing the floor and it's like an explosion of dark hair emerging from his head from the force of whipping his head.

Spacemen 3, PLAYING WITH FIRE

On a white background, in the middle, are the words "PLAYING WITH FIRE" and "SPACEMEN 3". "PLAYING WITH FIRE" has within the letters a photo of fire. Around this are five words arranged in a circle: REVOLUTION (pink), PURITY (purple), LOVE (yellow), SUICIDE (blue) and ACCURACY (green). Between each of those words is the Spacemen 3 logo, which is a gold triangle with a "3" in the middle of it, topped with a six-pointed star shape.

The Stone Roses, THE STONE ROSES

This is a painting in a Jackson Pollock style, of splatters of white and black paint on a dark green background. On the left are three thick strips of paint, one red, one white, one blue. There are three circular slices of an orange or lemon on the canvas as well. THE STONE ROSES in gold lettering is in the center, and one of those slices forms the O of Roses.

The Sugarcubes, HERE TODAY, TOMORROW NEXT WEEK!

A bluish-white background showing a photograph of a whole bunch of bubbles. In front of the bubble is a drawn figure who kind of looks like he's made of six q-tips: one vertical, and two across horizontally, with the buds of the first q-tip making the "hands" and the buds of the second, lower q-tip making the "feet." The bud on top of the vertical q-tip has a simple face drawn on it, two eyes and an open mouth. There are sweat beads flying from its head. The overall effect is a very worried q-tip person.

Tears for Fears, THE SEEDS OF LOVE

An extremely busy photograph of the two members of Tears for Fears with a number of objects superimposed in front of them, while standing in front of a mural on a wall. Tears for Fears are two white men, one with long black hair and one with short black hair. Each one holds a small pole in front of them, with an object attached to the top of it. The first one is a handkerchief, I think? The second one has a small sun shape. The first man is dressed in blue, the second in gold. The objects superimposed in front of them are things like sunflowers, a wooden cube, a wooden sphere, wooden pyramid, blue sunflowers. The mural behind them shows a sun with a human face, that appears to be made of metal, with a blue sky and a mountain range in front of it.

Technotronic, PUMP UP THE JAM

On a pink background that slowly fades into white by the bottom is the silhouette of a woman. The original photo was probably of her dancing, but it's been arranged so she's facing down, so the effect is that she's falling.

The The, MIND BOMB

A headshot of The The's Matt Johnson, a white man with his head shaved short, with a receding hairline. He has a dark brow and pointy stubble. He has a very serious expression on his face, but with a slight wryness, which if you've heard his music, makes sense. The photo has had the background removed, so his head appears to float in a white blank nothing.

Throwing Muses, HUNKPAPA

A dark yellow background. In the middle of it, taking most of the space, is a bright yellow circle with squares attached to the outside of it, suggesting a sun. Within it is a drawing of a creature, done in a kind of Paleolithic cave style. It has four legs, horns, ridges on its back, a tail.

Tin Machine, TIN MACHINE

A photograph of the four members of Tin Machine, three white men and David Bowie, who is an alien. They are all dressed in spiffy suits and ties. They are lined up facing to the left, with one member closer to the camera and the last one furthest away from the camera. David Bowie and the guy furthest away from the camera, who has very long brown hair, are looking at the camera while the other two seem to be looking at something to the left and up out of frame.

Tone Lōc, LŌC-ED AFTER DARK

A black and white photo of Tone Lōc, a Black man in a patterned sweater. He's standing at the driver's side door of a car. He looks vaguely sad or perhaps bored. The shot is taken low from the opposite side of the car, so the car dominates the picture. The headlight of the car, very large in the picture, is recessed into the body of the car in a way I've never seen before. Wikipedia says it's a Jaguar e-type car, and the cover is based on jazz legend Donald Byrd's cover for A NEW PERSPECTIVE. I just looked at that cover, and yes, it is.

The Tragically Hip, UP TO HERE

A photoshopped color photo of the band on a city street, possibly in Europe somewhere. They're just standing there, being photographed for an album cover. The buildings in the background and parts of the band members look like they have been painted over digitally, and in some cases warped. If this came out today, people would say it was bad AI art. (Meaning even worse than the usual AI art.)

The Vaselines, DUM-DUM

In the middle is a grid of four rectangles, each one with a headshot of a member of the band. They're all white guys except for a dark haired woman in the upper right. Along the left side, going down horizontally, are alternating pictures of a flying cherub and a star within a circle. Along the right side, going down horizontally, are alternating pictures of a half-skull and a simple star shape.
The link for this album goes to the compilation Enter the Vaselines. To recreate the album Dum-Dum, go to Disc One and listen to tracks 8-10, then track 6, then tracks 12-17.

Violent Femmes, 3

A black and white photo of Violent Femmes, three white guys, just guys, no femmes. They're dressed mostly in black. One sits and holds something small in his hands, I can't tell what it is. The other two stand close to each other near the sitting one. They all look at the camera. They appear to be on a stage or perhaps a rehearsal studio.

Voivod, NOTHINGFACE

The head of a humanoid, perhaps alien creature, with pink skin. It has no mouth, and a circuitry-type design on its forehead. There are various pipes leading from the edge of the picture and going into the head. The background is blue. I don't know if Voivod say "trans rights" but they seem like a metal band that would.

The Wedding Present, BIZARRO

A dark brown-green background. In red, done with a pencil or crayon, is a kind of explosion shape, made out of a series of scribbles.

The Wonder Stuff, HUP

A still from the famous silent movie short, A TRIP TO THE MOON by Georges Méliès, showing a moon with a human face -- it's more like a human face that's been covered with cool whip -- with a bullet-shaped rocket sticking out of its eye. It has a kind of disgruntled look on its face. (Wouldn't you be?) This still is tinted blue, and "The Wonder Stuff" and HUP are superimposed over it.

Wire, IT’S BEGINNING TO AND BACK AGAIN

On a white background is a black and white photo of a brick wall and gravel or rubble, but the photo is upside down so the gravel or rubble or whatever is on top. There are dark streaks of presumably filth on the brick wall. I'm guessing this was taken from one of England's many railroads. Above this is WIRE and below the photo is IBTABA, in I think it's bold Helvetica. I only mention it because this font was Wire's visual branding through the 80s and early 90s and it has personal meaning to me.

XTC, ORANGES AND LEMONS

A cartoonish drawing of the member of XTC done in a psychedelic, YELLOW SUBMARINE (the movie) way. It's full of color, lots of reds, yellows, oranges and deep blues. One figure is playing a guitar, and the neck of the guitar is turning into the airstream of a jet fighter airplane. Another guitarist sits on a bass drum labled XTC. Behind them is a guy playing standup bass. There is a pink horn shooting out oranges and lemons behind them.

"Weird Al" Yankovic, UHF - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK AND OTHER STUFF

A picture of Weird Al from the shoulders up. He has a long narrow head, a brown mustache, and a big head of curly brown hair. He's wearing a Hawaiian shirt. His eyes are replaced with blue grey TV test patterns. He has a slight grin on his face. The sky behind him is red.

Yo La Tengo, PRESIDENT YO LA TENGO

A black and white still of Yo La Tengo in concert, showing a white guy playing guitar and a woman on drums, but the still is, I think, being warped and burned as if caught in a projector. I think. I could not find a good, large version of this picture, so I'm working from a very small one, and my 53 year old eyes can only do so much.

Young MC, STONE COLD RHYMIN’

A blurry close up of a young Black man rapping into a square-shaped microphone, it kind of looks like Norelco electric razor, to be honest. He's wearing a white suit and has a watch on his wrist.

Neil Young, FREEDOM

A color photgraph of Neil Young, a white man in a blue jacket, blue cap with a white star on it, and tie-dyed shirt with a radiation symbol on it. He is singing. He exhibits the most "cranky uncle" energy in the universe. He's playing acoustic guitar and has one of those harmonica holders on his neck. It looks like it was shot in concert.
