Hey folks!

Pearl Jam, BINAURAL vs Amon Tobin, SUPERMODIFIED

Yes, the Best Album of 2000 Run-Off Tournament is here! You should be familiar with the details by now, but if you aren’t, or if you’re new (welcome!), then read up on it here.

This tournament is going to run Monday through Friday, from today (Monday, May 27th) to Monday, June 17th, so expect a newsletter for each of those days, revealing the winner of the previous day’s match and announcing the new one.

If you haven’t listened to one or both albums yet, I encourage you to do so before voting. If that’s time prohibitive, then see if you can listen to the first 2-3 tracks of each — trust me, you’ll know how you feel about each after that.

To vote, go to the Google Form located here. You will be required to sign in to Google; if you can’t or won’t do this, shoot me an email (kentmbeeson@hey.com) and we’ll figure something out.

MATCH #1

Seed #16 Pearl Jam, BINAURAL

The cover of Pearl Jam’s BINAURAL album. Two red rings that overlap Venn style, and Venn part is yellow and also has an eye in the middle of it.

Seed #17 Amon Tobin, SUPERMODIFIED

The cover of Amon Tobin’s SUPERMODIFIED album. Hard to describe — a bunch of smooth, abstract shapes in grey blue and grey brown on a black background. It’s probably actually something but I couldn’t tell you what.

KENT’S KORNER

Not Kent but may as well be.

I only listened to BINAURAL once, a few days ago, and despite a bit of chattering that it’s boring or weak or whatnot, it seemed like a pretty standard set of Pearl Jam tunes, strong if not particularly distinctive. If you like Pearl Jam, I don’t see why you wouldn’t like this. I’ve heard SUPERMODIFIED twice now, and I liked it the first time and even more the second. “I”EDM can be a bit stand-offish, but this one has, imo, a very open and friendly feel to it. The only thing that bugs me (incoming pun not intended) about it is that the original release had a single called “Four Ton Mantis” that has been disappeared from the Internet, presumably because of sample clearance issues. So completely gone, in fact, that I’m afraid we have to consider the current incarnation of this album canon.
