Light the World ✨
A special week calls for a special email. I’ll be back with regular emails about JavaScript (and TypeScript) next week!
As developers, we have unique and special skills and capabilities. As a community we often complain and joke about the fact that Christmas time is the time for our family members to take advantage of our computer skills in various ways (updating their browsers/OS/fixing printers/etc. etc. etc). At this special time of the year, I’m sending you a short message to encourage you to not grumble when your loved ones ask for your help. In fact, I would like to encourage you to do something special this week to light the world:
Whether you believe in Jesus Christ as I do, believe in another God, or believe in no God at all, I think we can agree that if there’s one thing this world could use more of, it is loving selfless service. This week, I’d encourage you to think of one way you can use your special and unique skills as a developer to lovingly serve someone else. Build an app, help setup someone’s phone, help someone adopt a password manager, whatever it is. Find some way to serve someone this season.
I’m going to enjoy my time with my family this week, so the email this week is brief, but I’ll be back next week and I’ll probably talk about the TypeScript changes that have been coming over me recently :)
Things to not miss:
- Christmas… with your family and friends. Cherish the relationships you have. Relationships are the key to true and lasting happiness. Merry Christmas.
- Shurlan - My fantasy novel (draft) about a utopian city where food allotments start dropping, a rebellion starts, and a 14 year old girl is the key to restoring peace.
Some tweets from this last week:
I’ve been using TypeScript for ~1 week now. Migrating from Flow. Breath. Of. Fresh. Air. I’ll blog about this in a week or two. This is really great though.
Every time I use @gatsbyjs I love it more.

This week’s blog post is “React Hooks: What’s going to happen to my tests?”. It’s the published version of my newsletter from 2 weeks ago. If you thought it was good, go ahead and give it some claps (👏x50) and a retweet:
I just published “React Hooks: What’s going to happen to my tests?” ↪️⚛️🏆↩️
React Hooks: What’s going to happen to my tests?
How can we prepare our tests for React’s new hooks feature?
