Quarterly Q&A | Writing, publishing, editing, oh my!

What's my next project? What's the timeline to publish a novel? Who let the dogs out?

Happy September, folks. Next month, Marginalia will be one year old, which is pretty wild to consider. I feel like a lot has happened in just 12 months, but I suppose that’s true every time I look back over my shoulder to see the path behind.

It's been BUSY, so I'm sorry that Marginalia was a little neglected. I hope you didn't miss it too much!!

Whatcha working on atm?

I’m positively frothing at the mouth to talk about Project H&H, my next YA novel. Alas, I cannot say much. But to make up for it, here is some art I commissioned of the main characters…

A digital drawing of two characters against a grey background. On the left is Subin, the shorter of the two characters. They are Korean, with a shaggy hairstyle that goes just past their shoulders. Their hair is black, with the underneath dyed blond. Their hands are in their pockets of their black slacks, and they are slightly slouched. Their shirt is white and untucked, and their blazer is black and unbuttoned. Subin’s body is turned away from Guard Dog, but they are looking back at him. Guard Dog is wearing the same clothes as Subin, though the top few buttons of his shirt are undone, revealing some scars on his neck, and his blazer is fastened. He has black hair that is a little unkempt, and a scar across his face. He also turns away from Subin, while looking back at them.

A digital illustration, a portrait of a white man with blond hair, green eyes, and a strong nose. His hair is parted in the middle and falls into his eyes a little. He is looking at the viewer, smiling and showing his teeth. He has a silver vertical labret piercing. He is wearing a white shirt with the top button undone, and an oversized green knit cardigan. It has a yellow background with purple flowers and green leaves and vines.

What’s the timeline for writing/editing/publishing?

The horrible truth of it is: it depends.

Take my current WIP, Project H&H. The concept first came to me in 2022. I only began seriously drafting it about a year ago. Because I don’t write full time, and because I’m autistic and constantly trying to avoid burning out, it takes more time for me to draft. Some authors have a “one book a year” schedule, which is insane to me, even though they write full time. It’s just not enough time for me to let an idea and characters and worlds grow and bloom as much as they need to for a satisfying read. I process things slowly. Sorry!
