Starting a Book - Finance for Software Engineers
Greetings on this fine Monday.
Over the past few weeks I've started to put together a new project: a book. The goal is to write a book about finance for software engineers.
Finance is a topic that's always been interesting to me. What's the difference between get-rich-quick schemes and more sustainable wealth-building efforts? Can you tell the difference? Can you get better than a coin-toss when it comes to selecting healthy, sustainable companies?
By gaining a surface-level understanding, I hope developers can unlock more career growth for themselves and personal financial gain. The companies they work for will be more well-rounded, able to innovate not just on engineering axes but financial as well.
I've put together a site called The Finance Book for Software Engineers to track progress and provide an early look at some of its content.
The book is current a few chapters and a list of questions I'd like to answer. A sampling of the questions:
- Why are software engineers paid so much?
- Why is the question “Are you profitable?” hard to answer?
- Why does it seem like companies raise so much money from VCs with few strings attached?
The book also has a newsletter and a Twitter, but I'll also probably publish updates here as well.
If there are any questions or topics you would like to see covered in the book, please respond to this email. Having discussions with fellow engineers will help hone the contents of the book.
I hope to share more soon as the book progresses!
