Immingham Gap

Pictures from first camp:

A bit more detail on 3rd night (already described in last post) - bus into Barton then train to barrow haven to pick up roughly where I left off.

Walked to new Holland - note that the arrow on the way marker for the KCIII was pointing the wrong way. took a diversion into town (the route is left into the industrial area, following the public footpath sign).

picked up water in NH - a quick diversion if needed.

then camped as previous.

slight vibe change from goxhill haven to Immingham - concern switches from landowners to youths

still some good camp spots especially before East Halton skitter.

from EHS to North killingholme Haven a couple of passable camp spots but not as nice - then at NKH the only spot before Immingham is the marsh

this field looks superficially decent but ground quite uneven (I didn’t go down to check) and slight worry of youths as it’s near a road
the same field, looking back up the track to where the road ends at EH Skitter outlet

The bird hut (NKH)

There's a bird watching hut on the marsh that may be usable, or the marsh itself has some good ground (watch out for stubble spiking the ground sheet) although the bit I camped on can be under water, presumably in winter.

when I first got to NKH I met a couple who gave me a lift into South killingholme for supplies. I messed it up a bit - firstly forgot to drop my rubbish and was a bit rushed in the shop (which doesn't have a great range of food anyway, especially fresh), then the couple offered to give me a lift straight to Immingham to skip the oil port bit. I wanted to see every mile for the guide and there are some old lighthouses you can see between NKH and Immingham, so I decided to go back to NKH, but I'd consider taking up an offer like this if you get the chance.

The couple dropped me back in NKH (thanks!!) and I carried on.

Saw the lighthouses then reached the point where you have to go inland to go round the port. From there the path takes you to a round about on a busy A road then just stops. It picks up again on the other side of Immingham, which is something like a 2 hour walk and 3 hours on public transport (need to check this).

I'd seen this gap on the map but hadn't realised how quickly it was coming up so hadn't planned for it. it was getting late by this time - 5 or 6 when I got to the round about. the thing with it is there isn't a foot path by the road that goes into Immingham, so you have to either walk a very long way around or hitch along the road (not recommending this, obviously).

ended up getting a lift into Immingham - right to Tesco, thanks guy who works at the docks! - then walked back to NKH, back to where I'd dropped my bag, then back to NKH to camp at the marsh where I'd started. 11pm by the time I got the tent up, wind blowing hard.

if you have supplies and time it to camp at the marsh late, you could probably set off in the morning and get through to the other side of Immingham in one day, but there's still the question of which route to take - the situation where the path stops means that if you don't want to walk on A roads, hitch, and/or take a long route, you might be best off skipping the section between NKH and Immingham, missing the lighthouses, and taking the most direct route from NKH to Immingham, which is going inland on Haven road. (or getting transport.)

I’m currently back in civilisation for another kit rework and resupply.

Kit thoughts

Weight is important. There seems to be a tipping point around the weight of my current bag, where a couple more kilos takes the bag into “not sparking joy” territory.

cannibalising the old bag to make dedicated straps for sleeping back, tent, and mat on the outside
