the garden gate, vol. 20 🌿

a quick word from the gardener

It's been a while since I opened this gate. I saw the date on my last email and felt it β€” that old reflex to count the silent weeks, to list what I've been doing instead, to make the gap mean something about me.

The invitation I’d written for you in this email (below) - to put down the measuring cup - turned out to be an invitation for me first.

So I'm setting my cup down right here, in front of you. No justifying my quiet. No searching for worthy things accomplished since you've heard from me. Just this: I'm still here. Still digging in the dirt with Him, in all my gardens.

For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever. Amen.
β€” Romans 11:36

notes to explore:

prayer guide: jacob's ladder β€” a guided prayer through Genesis 28, naming the ordinary and hard places that are the House of God.

turn and go home β€” on the difference between guilt and shame, and the posture our Father takes towards us when we repent

prayer for the children β€” praying that the kids I love would know Yahweh as He really is, and that nothing in me would stand in the way

delight: foam against trees and sun

The absolute magic of having pieces of foam flying through the air against a crystal clear, sunny sky β€” with kids shrieking and trees blowing in the wind. The feel of the cool bubbles against my calves and knees as I leave the moms on the sideline and wade deep to laugh with my boy.

today’s invitation

Stop keeping score.
Put down the measuring cup.

The miles run, the words written, the streak you keep β€” and underneath it all, the scary question: am I doing enough?

You can't measure a soul the way you measure flour and sugar. You can’t chart outcomes in the Kingdom of God like weather statistics.

And the results were never yours to count: you get to dig in the dirt beside Jesus and leave the harvest to Him.

Shoulders down. A long breath out.
Your life is too rich to measure.

Thank you for going down the path with me today. If this is your first time, I encourage you to check out this note explaining the idea of the digital garden and what's up with the weird title πŸ˜„.

Peace to you! ✌️
