| Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare, %FIRSTNAME%? The hare is fast and he knows it. So, when the tortoise suggests a race, he gladly accepts, knowing he’s got this in the bag. He’s so confident he’ll win he decides to take a nap before he triumphantly crosses the finish line ahead of the tortoise.
Meanwhile, the tortoise keeps its steady pace, step by step as he moves toward the finish line. And by the time the hare wakes up to see the tortoise has overtaken him, it’s too late and he loses the race he could have easily won.
I think about this story more as people declare plans for the blank slate of the year we have before us. I think about it when I see people share their resolutions.
We tend to make big plans and jump into them this time of year and, much like the hare, we fizzle out when we lose stamina. (I speak from many years of experience doing exactly this.) This year, I want to be the tortoise, setting a pace I can sustain that gets me to the finish line.
The hare had too much of an ego to think the tortoise’s approach to the race would ever lead to a win. He was wrong and learned it the hard way. I’ve been fortunate enough to find people I trust and respect who are willing to give me feedback if they see me doing something in a way that’s not ideal.
The tortoise set his sights on the goal and didn’t let anything distract him. He knew what he wanted and stayed focused on what he had to do.
So, this year, be the tortoise. And on those days when it feels like things are going achingly slow, remember one of my favourite quotes: “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.”
Because if the tortoise and the hare were cars, who’d ever want the bone-jarring ride of the hare?
Happy New Year, %FIRSTNAME%! Karen
