Welcome to Karama's First Bi-Weekly Update
Subject: Delaware incorporation, pilot results, and what's next
Hi all,
Welcome to the first of our bi-weekly updates on Karama Data.
As a reminder, Karama is employing women in Gaza to do AI data labeling.
I've added you to this newsletter since I thought you might be interested in what we're doing. Feel free to unsubscribe below if you aren't interested. We'll use these to keep you posted on progress, share results, and flag where we could use your help. Here's where things stand:
We're incorporated in Delaware. Karama Data LLC is now formally set up, with The Gaza Children Village as sole member and a Board of Managers in place. This gives us the legal structure we need to start contracting with clients.
Our 4-week pilot is complete — and the results are strong. Two Palestinian women in Gaza completed 3,031 annotation tasks across three task types (Preference Ranking, Dialect Identification, and Sentiment Tagging), benchmarked against published international standards:
- Preference Ranking accuracy (88.55%) came in above the 83–87% range reported by major AI labs
- Dialect Identification was on par with the NADI 2024 international benchmark for Palestinian Arabic
- Sentiment Tagging landed just under the typical published range, with a clear, correctable cause (a guideline gap we've already fixed for next round)
- Both labelers hit 100% task completion, and the pilot came in on budget
We see this as a strong proof of concept: skilled, reliable annotation work, done at quality levels that hold up against industry benchmarks — while creating real economic opportunity for Palestinian women in Gaza.
The attachment gives the full results.
The website is next. We're actively working on getting the website live so we have a proper home for the mission, the pilot results, and future client outreach.
What's next: a bigger pilot. Based on what we learned in round one, we're planning to scale up to more labelers in the coming weeks, with tighter calibration and guideline improvements already built in from this round's findings.
No specific ask today — but heads up, in the next update or two we'll likely be asking for introductions to companies that need Arabic data labeling or annotation work. The website needs to be live before we get any introductions.
Thanks for following along and for your support so far. Feel free to forward this email/link to anyone who might be interested in what we're doing.
