📰 News
Wildfire smoke is affecting both physical and mental health across the Interior. Interior Health says short-term effects can include coughing, eye and throat irritation and wheezing, with higher risks for children, pregnant people and anyone with underlying conditions. Repeated cancellations and the need to stay indoors can also disrupt routines, reduce social connection and take a psychological toll. (CFJC Today)
Hot Nite in the City brings about 300 registered vehicles to downtown Kamloops Saturday. The free show-and-shine stretches from the 100 through 600 blocks of Victoria Street, with vintage cars, European models, four-by-fours, supercars, motorcycles and same-day entries. The poker run and drag races are not part of this year's transition under new organizer Joe Doyle. (CFJC Today)
Prospective Kamloops councillors were reminded that individual elected officials cannot act alone. Former Golden mayor Christina Benty told a local-governance workshop that council's authority comes through collective policies, bylaws and resolutions. She encouraged voters to question candidates making sweeping personal promises and urged candidates to weigh service expectations against what taxpayers can afford. (Castanet)
A new Falkland wildland fire truck helped stop a Highway 97 brush fire about an hour after entering service. The fire began when strong winds knocked down a hydro line on August 1. Firefighters credited the truck's larger water capacity, high clearance and ability to pump while moving with helping contain the flames before they became another major wildfire. 🏛️ What Changed
Power has been restored to the Village of Clinton after a two-week wildfire outage. BC Hydro replaced about 200 destroyed poles and restrung more than six kilometres of line before re-energizing the townsite and roughly 500 customers Friday afternoon. The restoration supports critical infrastructure, including water facilities, though surrounding properties remain without power while repairs continue. (Castanet)
🚨 Safety
The TNRD ordered 57 properties southwest of Merritt to evacuate as the Ainslie Creek fire advanced. The order covers properties in the Coldwater area after the fire's southeastern flank grew roughly four to five kilometres. An expanded evacuation alert now covers 783 properties across Electoral Areas M, I and N, and residents under order must leave immediately. (Radio NL · CFJC Today)
Kamloops firefighters contained a brush fire in Peterson Creek to about 0.23 hectares. Twelve firefighters and four trucks responded near Whiteshield Crescent South Friday afternoon, stopping the fire before it reached nearby Sahali homes. (CFJC Today)
Police are seeking a tractor-trailer driver who may have dashcam footage of a serious Coquihalla crash. A white GMC Sierra left the northbound lanes near Exit 286 south of Merritt on July 30 and rolled onto its side, seriously injuring a passenger. Witnesses said a commercial driver stopped and mentioned having footage but left before speaking with officers. (Castanet · CFJC Today)
