Big Talk Newsletter: Big Talk in a Small Town + October Theory!

If Big Talk inspires or helps you, please consider pre-ordering the Big Talk book. Thanks for your support!

Hi friends,

Have you heard of October Theory? It’s the idea that with three months left of the year, we may now feel motivated to hone in on our goals. Yesterday, I picked up a paintbrush for the first time all year, recalling how one of my initial goals for 2025 was to create more freely.

Here are some October Theory-inspired Big Talk Questions for you to reflect on by yourself or with a partner:

  • Who and what matter most to you right now?

  • What are you feeling the urge to let go of and remove from your life?

  • What’s something you’d like to finish, return to, or begin before the year ends?

October isn’t just about finishing what we started — it’s about remembering why we started. A time to return to ourselves and reconnect with what matters most!

That being said, I’m excited to share with you a project I started this summer and finally completed:

Big Talk in a Small Town

This summer, I traveled to Williamsburg, Kentucky — a small Appalachian town where everyone seems to know each other’s name, and community is a way of life.

I was invited by Spectrum to bring Big Talk to Williamsburg and interview residents about something deeply important: the role of healthcare in rural communities.

I was welcomed in by the mayor, the pastor’s wife, and Rocky, the local theater owner and a cancer survivor.

For many people in Williamsburg, getting medical attention used to mean driving long hours to the nearest hospital. But the opening of Dayspring Health Center — made possible in part by Spectrum’s investment — has changed that.

Now, parents can bring their children for routine check-ups without taking a day off work. Seniors can get preventative care close to home. And healthcare professionals can serve the people they grew up alongside.

Through Big Talk interviews, I heard stories of resilience, relief, and gratitude. People shared not just about their medical needs, but about how healthcare access preserves their way of life and strengthens their community.

This experience reminded me why I started Big Talk in the first place: to replace small talk with real conversations that connect us and make an impact.

In Williamsburg, those conversations became a powerful reminder that healthcare access is about people — their families, their hopes, and their futures.

Thank you,

Kalina
