1. "
making the band (danity kane)" by earl sweatshirt. earl is one of my favorite rappers forever, but some of the choices in his more recent music feel intentionally unfriendly to the listener, like not quite
advanced genius theory but this kind of brechtian sandpaper friction, whereas this song is a purer syrup of the quicksilver flow that made his early work so mind-blowing for me, the density of the syllables and rhyme schemes (but without ever sounding too rippity rappity all sound no sense)
2. "
can i talk my shit" by vagabon is the song that deborah and i have been singing around the house the last week. this is the most pop thing she has done, with a bridge that reminds me of "
just like magic" by ariana (a high compliment, still fondly remember the week we were in LA when
positions had just come out) and of the most recent sza album. the arrangement of the song is minimalistic and really well engineered to make all the space to center the multi-tracked vocals which are so sweet and clean icebox plum vibes. a stoner psalm.
3. "
vampire" by olivia rodrigo is just fucking undeniable, it is the perfect second album first single last day of june drop and it is also just in every way perfect (with the incredibly minor exception of i think the lyrics would be slightly more perfect if she sang "star fucker" instead of "fame fucker"). the play with dynamics, the sound effects, the way that the melody develops as she races toward the chorus and like hits a mario kart boost when she sings "you sold me for parts" my god. you can already tell it's going to be such a good song to karaoke (for a young artist early in her career her great karaoke song hit rate is pretty impressive)(remember when we were at baby ketten and deborah did "brutal")
