1. my favorite quick meal to make myself (for lunch or dinner, but i'm having it for lunch this week), and is to start two pieces of diced thick-cut bacon (or if veg use coconut oil or olive oil) in a pan over medium high heat and then once it's started to cook a little and release its fat, pour in a drained can of chickpeas and your choice of spices (lately i do salt, fly by jing mala spice, and lots of MSG). in another pan, add some olive oil and dump in a head of roughly-chopped kale (i go pretty low on the stem!). let the kale cook down a bit and as its starting to wilt, pour in a slug of vinegar (balsamic or black for me usually) and a slug of fish sauce and let it steam and wilt down further. divide kale between two bowls and distribute chickpea/bacon mixture on top. garnish with a sprinkle of store-bought fried shallots, a drizzle of honey or agave, and hot sauce (cholula for me this week) or chili crisp. stir and enjoy with a bit of fresh fruit (serves two or your lunch today and tomorrow).
2. also in food: a really good watermelon, william carlos williams-ass plums, ham sandwiches for dinner this week, freshly made chocolate chip cookies. yesterday it wasn't as sunny so the heat broke and we were able to turn off the air conditioner for a while in the evening. i went running first thing in the morning and felt like the rest of my day was so much better for it, gonna try again this morning. at the grocery store we got miso a stuffed duck toy and she seems to really like it.
3. the writing of colin robinson's character in
what we do in the shadows. his gimmick is that unlike the other "classic" blood-sucking vampires on the show, he's
an emotional vampire who feeds on people's discomfort/boredom/annoyance (and thus is always trying to get them into that state) which adds this delightful meta aspect to everything his character says because it's all about foregrounding how invisibly draining and painful cliches can be.
