i'm thankful for the sunrise alarm clock that d got us during the depths of winter, which gradually increases the amount of light like the sun rising and also plays birdsong (multimodal wake-up therapy), a thing that i always thought seemed like gilding the lily but i have really appreciated and i'm thankful that now it's summer and so it gets brighter earlier and there are actual birds singing outside but we still use the alarm clock and so sometimes the layer of "real" and "simulated" light and sound interweave between each other which is pleasing to my sleepy brain.
i'm thankful for
this ask metafilter question about cats and screentime and especially for this prose poem of an answer:
We gave in and gave the cats their own small TV that they control with a motion sensor. It has done them no appreciable harm and they go back and forth between watching the real birds or the TV birds. They don't appear to be anxious or frustrated except when a power outage knocks their TV out of commission and we don't fix it fast enough for them. Sometimes they get annoyed at that.
i'm thankful for
the miniature crossword that i did at the bottom of some
new york magazine article, even though i am not really a person who does crosswords, and i'm thankful for the elegant and mobile browser-friendly UX decisions that whoever built the crossword made.
i'm thankful for
invisible things by mat johnson, which was a very fun read and which i know is an allegory for Current Events but doesn't feel limited and bound in the way that allegories often do (his earlier novel
pym is also so great). i'm thankful for long quiet summer weekend afternoons reading with d. i'm thankful that we got to see friends on saturday and the weather was very nice.
i'm thankful for
this coffee cake that d made with leftover buttermilk from biscuits she made last week.
i'm thankful that though i feel apprehensive about a change at work tomorrow, i don't feel afraid. i'm thankful for the trust that i have with my manager and that she has with me. i'm thankful that though i have a meeting, i will get to spend several hours coding alone tomorrow and the thing that i'm working on is going well.
i'm thankful that i just remembered i did a load of laundry earlier but didn't move it over to the dryer (i'm thankful that we have a washer and dryer in our house) which i might not have remembered otherwise and then i wouldn't have had running shorts to wear tomorrow.
