Justice For Myanmar welcomes TotalEnergies withdrawal from Myanmar
January 21, 2022, Myanmar: Justice For Myanmar responds to TotalEnergies decision to withdraw from Myanmar.
Justice For Myanmar spokesperson Yadanar Maung says: “We welcome TotalEnergies’ decision to withdraw from Myanmar, which is a major step in cutting off funds to the illegal military junta. TotalEnergies has finally taken heed of the calls of Myanmar people, local and international civil society to stop the flow of funds to the terrorist junta.
“It is now essential that governments move ahead with targeted sanctions on oil and gas to deny the junta funds from the remaining oil and gas projects.
“Other companies in the sector, including POSCO International, PTTEP, Petronas, ONGC, GAIL, KOGAS, ENEOS and Mitsubishi, should take immediate steps to stop all payments to the junta by whatever means possible.
“TotalEnergies must now ensure that they exit responsibly in a way that mitigates negative human rights impacts on people in Myanmar during the process of their withdrawal.”
